Spector Reverse PJ

To my ears, a Spector PJ is one of the few PJs that are intriguing.

Anyone ever played a double P Spector by chance?
My 5-string Spector NS Pulse wears 2 EMG 40PX pickups now. It used to have 40DCs which gave it (together with the Spector TonePump) the well-known growly Spector tone, similar to the Jazz bass but more hi-fi, and it also DEMOLISHED my Boss Katana or any interface or amp I plugged it into in terms of gain. Pair up incredibly hot pickups with the incredibly hot TonePump Jr. and this is what you get...

With the double P pickups and with the TonePump removed the bass now sounds much more traditional. The growl no longer sounds scooped / hifi but more in the low-mids range and more in your face, like a rabid dog. Being EMG pickups (and X-series no less), there's plenty of treble/clack so I slapped a set of D'Addario Chromes on it and it sounds like a Fender Jazz bass but with split coils instead of single coils. If you were blindfolded you wouldn't know it's a Spector. Maybe that's a turn-off for some people, but I was more interested in the Spector look instead of the Spector sound.

Interesting! I thought I was the only Spector fan to get into the brand mostly because of looks (and ergonomics).

I already liked a smaller bass body with curved edges and had gravitated toward the Ibanez SR (clearly influenced by Spector) and then here on TB I discovered the Spector Club and that was it. All those gorgeous images of Spectors began to give me the itch.

It was only later on that I discovered that some of my favorite albums had Spectors on them (Alice In Chain's Dirt, Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime and Empire, and that it was the bass Sting played on the Synchronicity tour). But I had played mostly guitar in the 90s so even though I was a huge fan of bassists, I didn't pay attention to what gear they used.

The EMG soapbars are interchangeable, so it is relatively easy to get a dual P setup. Also worth noting, the EMG soapbar P pickups are reversed, and so doing this will get you a double reversed P setup. I have this setup right now on one of my Spector Bantam 5 basses and I agree that it is much more tame compared to the stock DCs. I can try to get a sound sample up in the next few days.

A bit of torture for me. I’ve had a red burst 4 CST on order for a few months, it was supposed to be here November but now it looks more like January. I have no patience at the best of times…….

Maybe I'm in the minority (probably) but I'm not a fan of the burl top on the CSTs - the figuring just isn't that interesting to me. Give me a nice quilted or flamed maple top over that any day. I hope Spector expands the wood options on these at some point because I really like everything else about it.
I get what you are saying . If I was buying , the quilt or flame would be my choice as well. Sometimes burl can look like molded bread to me. It can look very beautiful too.

I do wish Spectors were more comfortable for me to play. If they ever do something like this in their short scale 5 , I’d buy one .

I’d be very interested in hearing this . Please let me know when you post sound samples . Message me a link.
Thank you

It reminds me of the dashboard I had in my 1990 Buick LeSabre that I bought from my grandparents when I went to college

I agree. Same with Spalted Maple. It can vary from plain to ugly to stunning. My LE Euro has minimal or light spalting so it's on the plain side compared to some very detailed spalted guitars I've seen. But the maple itself also has some light flaming in some spots and the overall color keeps it from looking too plain.
