Spiders

Let me start by saying I'm not afraid of spiders. I was doing some work at a house that has been empty for awhile. In a detached garage I killed 2 black widows and 1 brown recluse. 1 of the widows and the recluse were close to dropping their egg sacs. I had an electrical short I was searching for and opened a crawl space entrance. There's a bunch of cobwebs. They all looked dead. None of them were maintained. The crawl was wet and I could see what I needed to see without going in, so I only stuck my head in (yuk yuk). I'm thinking there has to be a spider or two in there I turn my head and this gal was 8" from my face. I jump back, "OH ****!" She's about 5" long and 3" wide. We squished her with a 1x4, and she ran off minus 2 left legs. Biggest spider I've ever seen in "the wild". That's an 8" tall cinder block she's on and the top is just out of frame. Check out the eye shine.

Note: I'm assuming it's a she because female spiders tend to be bigger than the males.

We get a lot of those...we call them wolf spiders and that one is a baby. Now go on and change your panties and man up!!!!

Just kidding....we get them in our house double that size and, I admit it....I call my wife to do the removal . I don't kill them as they are actually very cool predators. They hunt more than make webs. I have a lot of respect for my fellow hunting carnivores.

Wolf Spider. Big honkers.
My funnest moment was repairing a hot tub through the hatch in the ceramic surround, reaching up in there and fiddle diddlein' around for five minutes, then getting down and really looking around with a good light and there was a black widow where I was poking around. I emulsified her and never told the lady, she would have freaked !
As for me, I could tell dozens of spider and snake stories from when I was in the home repair business for 35 years. Never got bit, happy to say.

Spiders hold a morbid fascination for me. I don't mind having them in the house, but up here we don't have anything harmful otherwise I might feel differently. I'll see a spider and hope my wife doesn't see it 'cause she'll kill it on the spot. Great thread - here's a pic of supposedly the world's largest spider taking a crap - The Giant Huntsman:

I read a little more about it, and the Giant Huntsman is the world's largest spider by leg span, the largest by mass is the Goliath Bird Eater Tarantula:

Supposedly, you are never more than six feet from a spider. Dunno about whether that applies if you are in an airplane or on an orbiting space station, but I believe it everywhere else.
As long as I don't see them, I'm fine. Once I can see them and there is a chance that one will crawl on me, I'm outta there.

The word "phobia" gets tossed around a lot - I have a completely unreasonable fear of spiders - I kill them by what ever means necessary when they're in my house - Foot, vacuum and running over with the car have all been used many times........

Did you ever run a spider over with one of your model railroad cars?
