Double Bass Spirocores for less

Thanks. I already copied it to over there, but can't see how to erase the original over here!
Um, since you are here, Weich means light and Mittel means medium. Since the sets have the same part number, 3885, which did you actually get? I always preferred the 3885 Weichs, and the 3885.5 E string from that set is, in my opinion, the most underrated E string out there, with everybody for some reason wanting the S42's either Weich or Mittel instead. The easy way to tell which set you have: Weichs have red silk at the ball and purple at the peg box; Mittels have red at both ends. You are now set for at least twenty years, if not the rest of your playing days. Remember: everything goes with a dead Spirocore E string!

FWIW, 3885 indicates Spiro strings sized for a 3/4 size double bass. Weich, Mittel and Stark talk about the tension (3885 series does not have a Stark tension). In contrast, S42 followed by the tension abbreviation indicates strings sized for either 4/4 or 3/4 sized double bass. As it works out due to the physics of string making, there is also a gauge difference between the 3885 series and the S42 series; 3885 series strings are slightly thicker than the equivalent tension in S42 strings.

Yes. That is why IMO the 3885.5 Weich E string is the most versatile E string out there for double bass. See my thread about the comparative tension if every Spiro set were mounted on the same 3/4 bass, adjusting the published TI tension specs by the difference in the scale length they use for 3/4 versus 4/4:

And this thread that talks about all the E strings in particular:
Spiro E - You will be assimilated. Resistance is Futile
Everything goes with a dead Spiro E string.

3885 Weich is a good set. Not as wirey as the S42 Weich and a bit less tension than S42 Mittel, if that's what you're going for. It's what I'm (mostly) using. I did put an S42 Mittel G string on there and I like that bump...my bass...YMMV...IMHO...etc...et al
