Splitting & blending a signal

Cheapest options is either the boss ls-2 in a+b mode.

I use a boss tu-2 tuner and run both outs. When I click on the tuner it kills one signal (effects) and off both are on. Can't mix levels though. You can get both used for very cheap.

Keep us updated on the overdrive as I'm on the lookout also

That was one of the theories of how Justin Chancellor splits his signal, if I remember correctly?

It's a viable option, but that bit of extra flexibility the Wounded Paw gives is really tempting, haha.

Will do on the overdrive front. So many options out there.

Oh, JustSomeDude, the notion of putting a volume pedal in with the effects channel gave me some ideas right away, definitely going to look into that.

Also look at the differences of Vol Pedal before or after an effect.
Vol Pedal Pre Distortion changes the amount of Drive, VP Post gets rid of all the noise and fades it up and down at full saturation.
VP before Reverbs and Delays lets the Decay finish after you pull the Pedal down.
I've been on an MXR Kick lately and their Volume pedal has been a nice addition to my board.
Lighter and smoother than what I had before.

For basic splitting, I have been using the Radial ABY (has Lift, Isolation etc) but on my live pedalboard lately I have been using the Clean output of an MXR Blowtorch and it has been great.

If you want to go REALLY nuts, put a Looper on each Split :)
You can always get an extra "Ditto" pedal just to loop atmospheric stuff.
I briefly had several MIDI sync able loopers....then i remembered I play POP MUSIC!!

I was aiming for the Jambi tone when I figured this out actually.

As far as I know the (old version) bass whammy splits the signal. One of those might also be split by the boss tuner? Probably the one to the rat distortion.

I wouldn't be surprised if he does the same with his dd-3 delay.

I've been looking at an eno rat clone for £30. I pulled the trigger on one but they sent me a message saying it was out of stock and refunded me.

Chasing a Justin Chancellor type sound is actually what sent me down the path of blending. Not so much that I'm trying to cop any of his tones exactly, but I love the sound of drive and modulation together but independent of one another...the "dirty glass" idea, if you will.

The other thing that enticed me about blending was trying different drive pedals in parallel, largely inspired by the tones of Jon Stockman from Karnivool. Again, not targeting replication, but it got the wheels turning regarding the possibilities.

I think we're effecrively on the same page. I'd throw Jeff Caxide in too.

I never use a pick, and leave the EQ pretty much flat (as possible) so, as with yourself, it's not necessarily their tone I'm trying to cop, just the way they interact with effects.

Mytt88, I think you're right, I remember there being a disagreement over exactly how he achieved it, and what signal went where at what point. That Jambi sound is awesome.

For me the blending of distortions is where it's at.
While there are distortion effects that blend high and low frequency, or feature a crossover...
it is the same type of distortion blended together (at different frequencies).
Using the Schism (or similar 2+ channel parallel mixer/blender) allows me to mix different types of distortions to create a completely new flavor.
Really nice for molding my own distortion sound.
For instance, high frequency twang with low frequency muffled vroom.
Sharp definition in the notes, but with all low-end overdrive to fill the extra space.
Impossible to achieve with each effect on it's own.
Peanut butter and jelly, and such. ;)

I also go back and forth with putting my phaser in a channel, or leaving it after everything else.
Depends on the phaser I have on my board, and how good a blend it has, or what my mood is in during rewiring.

And of course, who's gonna notice I'm using two distortions rather than one?
Probably no one, but me and my band mates.
But if it sounds good, it is good.

I like the Peanut butter & jelly analogy :)

That's another very interesting idea. Marrying the ECT up with something that has a bit more high end bite might be cool. Many hours of experimentation.

I've bitten the bullet and ordered a Wounded Paw Blender V4 and a bunch of Lava cable. Really looking forward to meddling around with what happens where, when, and with what.

Hopefully have this rig idea complete and running before the end of the year. Until more ideas come up, that is.
