Sporadic Ampeg ba112 issue

I'm playing a Spector Legend through an Ampeg ba112 and have an issue that seems to appear out of nowhere, then disappears for weeks or months.
I love the Ampeg amp. I get compliments on my tone all the time, so I hate to put this girl out to pasture. Worse yet, I don't have the funds to get a bigger rig anytime soon and buying another one of these seems like a waste since it's really only good for small venues, rehearsals, and practice. I bought this one used online so I don't know how old it is or how it was treated prior to my owning it. For the first 3 months of use, never had a single issue. Then out of the blue, the amp suddenly cut out while playing one day. A crackle like static almost sound when attempting to play, and then no sound whatsoever. The issue has only occured at home in my apmt. Fortunately never at a band rehearsal or live gig.

Each time this has happened I've only had the volume on the amp fairly low (notch 2 or 3 or the 7'clock or 8'clock position). I'll be playing out of a book or some exercise during practice and then their is a little crackle and the amp cuts out. The first time it happened I was playing on my Ibanez SG w/ Active pickups. I swapped out the batteries in the bass but the problem didn't disappear that day. I shut off the amp, turned it back on, and repeated after it did it a couple more times. Then it sounded fine and the issue didn't appear again till a few weeks later. Did it for 2 days in a row, then stopped all the way. Then I bought a new bass.
I bought my Spector back in August or September, I forget, and for a couple of months, the amp issue never came back. Practicing 7 days a week at the above mentioned volume, then 2 band practices a week in a very small rehearsal studio where i've only had to turn it up to notch 4 or 5 (11'clock / Noon). Then suddenly, it happened last Wednesday. I go buy a brand new pack of Duracell 9volts, swap out the batteries thinking that was the issue but it happened again. Side note that may or may not be related, about 2 weeks ago, 2 Monster cables died. Thinking it was maybe the amp cutting out without the pre-crackle that I would normally hear, that maybe that was the issue and not the cables. But when I plugged the cables into my guitar amp, and fire up my Schector 7 string, they didn't work, so I knew the cables were bad. The first one I had since May. I switched it out with a brand new one that I hadn't used and was living in my case as a back up cable. 1 week later, it died. I don't think the 2 cables dying are related to the amp randomly acting up, but thought I would mention it since it is odd that 2 cables died.
I bought a new rotoworld cable earlier this week and the first night using it during practice, no problem. Then later that night, I go to play again and static, cut out.
Last night, I had no issues whatosever.

I know it's not the bass or cables as I've replicated the issue on 2 instruments and now 4 different cables.

I haven't been able to find anything through google regarding the problem. But I'm hoping this sounds familiar to someone on here who may have an idea where the issue lies with the possibility of fixing it myself.

You are not the first having issues with those craps... yes, because those low-end Ampegs are really craps :spit: all the way !

they are only 50 watts, it's not made to use with a drummer, and worse of it all, it doesn't handle high outputs, like active basses (if you want to burn it quickly, use a Stingray, or any 18V preamp).

I used one... with a passive bass and a pandora (!) and after with a 18V preamp The power stage died 2 times !! near than 60 $ repair each time, always the same as you: it's starting by crackles, come and go, come again, and if you push the volume slightly just near noon or a little over, it dies. Simple.... but really craps !!!!! DON'T USE IT FOR REHERSALS WITH A DRUMMER

Many issues like those have been reported in Europe or in USA, it's really the worse thing (maybe with a ... BA-115 ??) Ampeg ever did.

Threw it away, quick !

I disagree completely. Yes, they are "low end" amps compared to the Pro series or all-tube SVT's, but they are pretty nice mpractice combo's. The BA112 in particular, is a great home practice amp, with awesome tone for a solidstate amp. They are not meant to be used with a band or drummer, but it sounds like the OP's issue is perhaps an easy fix. Dirty contacts or switches inside the amp is a likely culprit. Well worth having it looked at and cleaned up inside.

Nonsense. Even BA112 has a -15db input for just that purpose. My BA112 sits in my friend's studio for practice (duo), never a glitch. Great tone. It is what it is, and when used properly does a good job.

I owned one, no technical issues at all. Loved the size, yet thought it sounded a tad sterile with an MIM Jazz, it sounded better with D'Adario flats though. The gent I sold it to loves it.

Recently I used one at a store while trying out an Ibanez that my GF loved the looks of and thinks I should have. It was a totally different amp. Sounded darn good for my needs.

Granted there are bigger, better Ampegs, yet it does fit in the front of my truck really well, sounds good enough and is loud enough for my needs. I do wish it had a low impedence out.

I had this problem with my B-100r.

Took it to a tech once or twice. They said the thing worked perfectly, they couldn't get it to fail. That might be admissible for at home practice, but not gigs. When I started playing regularly and had the means, I replaced it.

I just remembered:

Sometimes it'd come back with lower output capabilities. It would operate like that for weeks or months on end. Eventually it'd crackle and go back up to full volume.

That amp sounded good and was ultra loud for a 100 watt combo. Shame it had issues.

It's funny you say that, because I noticed last night and previously that it seemed like the volume hadn't "come back" after the last outage. I plan on replacing it eventually when I have the money as I need more for gigging anyway, but would still like to have this 100% for practice. I may take it apart and have a look myself and see if there is anything that stands out. Just don't know if it's worth the money to have repaired depending on the costs. As that money could be put towards the future upgrade.

NO RLY ??? lol

You know what ? every amp has a -10 or -15 or -20 db input for just that purpose, this one just not carry the active basses as every "normal" amp should do.

I'm playing bass since 20 years and had many bass amps, cabs, or heads whatsoever, and played a SVT-CL lately that I found brilliant, so it's not an Ampeg flaming from me, myself and I. I do not have any problem with Ampeg, but sorry, they've done a really uneven quality job with that amp: yes you can find some that will work perfectly, but I just think that when many times the same problem is reported, there's a real factory issue.

I've been playing bass for 44 years (So, does that give me more cred than you?). I only mention it because you did. I use the amp with an acoustic/electric Tacoma Thunderchief which is an active PU. No problems whatsoever. Ever.

Sure, any amp can have issues, but to pan all BA112's is a bit over the top. Any amp can have its input overdriven by a too-hot signal. It's a nice little amp and it serves its purpose ... but I've replaced it with a GK MB200 and GB STL-8 rig for live acoustic gigs (mostly the weight factor) and have much larger rigs for country and blues gigs with a full band.

n it since it is odd that 2 cables died.

I had the same issue with my BA112 that I have had for over 10 years. It has truly taken a beating on many gigs. Slowly started to be very unreliable due to cutting out at the volume. I just replaced the Op Amp behind the volume pot and it works great now. I bought a few extra in case it craps out again. It is not a loud amp but does the trick for practice and smaller acoustic gigs of which I do many.

I'm not trying to bash ampeg at all. But I tested 2 new v2 ba combos in a shop of late (110 & 112) and both had rattling issues.
Sounded very good so I was dissapointed in the build quality i even had the grills taken off just in case.

Were these fresh out of the box and through some teenaged customer abuse perhaps? Mine (BA 110) from a sealed box, hasn't had any issues in almost 2 years of ownership.

They were brand new just in they just got all the ba range in which was my reason for going. I didn't even bother with the 115 after the first two. And even if they were not new its not really the sort of place that would let anyone abuse any gear.

I am having the same problem as the OP. The amp is about 15 years old and I use it with a P and Jazz bass. I think this is or was a brilliant practice amp for the house. I changed the driver but the problem is still there. I got an Orange 50 watt combo to replace it but that really is crap and shows how good the Ampeg is when it is working
