Spring Tour Diary - 2016

I'm enjoying your tour diary too. We may play different genres to a different demographic but a tour is fun to follow no matter what. Especially for an old fart who sticks close to home these days.

I can't help but notice that sparsely populated Canadian bars look pretty much the same as they do here in California. Makes me feel right at home.

Keep 'em comin' and Rock on bro!!

Hey trailer, thanks. I think that may be the other point to this thread. We read a lot of doom and gloom here, and I'm not suggesting for a second that there isn't a reason for those feelings. But, at least in some genres, or hellz I'm no expert, maybe more genres than either of us can expect can maybe not make it rich, but have a [censored] good time playing music as a somewhat paid vacation.

I'm lucky, and I know I am, this tour is the hard work and time served by every musician that has lent their talent to this project. But particularly our current guitar player, who does the heavy lifting,.

@Zebra, said guitar player said I should just put you two in contact, so I will PM you when I get home with his email. PM me if you haven't heard from me by May 3, stupid work....
neat!

So found out some more about the venue, some of the history and such, two rooms in the building, we played the smaller one last night, and once the reopen some sealed exits, the capacities will go up.

The Red Room door, apparently it was the health and safety office once upon a time.

The Twentiest during sound check. Chatted a lot with these guys about touring, I think they are gonna give it a go, hope so anyways.
IMG_20160422_223146523.jpg
Bass rig for The Twentiest, he just switched from Ampeg, his band was ecstatic to see the ass end of his fridge for the last time.
IMG_20160422_225907987.jpg
Note the drum key on the bass players belt.
IMG_20160422_223159413.jpg IMG_20160422_223208282.jpg IMG_20160422_224550358.jpg IMG_20160423_241305992.jpg IMG_20160423_241313584.jpg
Crowd shots, not a big turnout, both the Twentiest and the Engineer turned over their pay packets, nice of them all. Take was $70, which of itself isn't inspiring, but over 2 shows we've netted almost 300 from the door, better...merch I never track, but even last night, with a limited turn out, I know we sold a few shirts, and a flask I think.

While the crowd wasn't big, they were having fun, so it turned out well. The venue just got their liquor license stuff all cleared, just not in time for this show.

Gotta drive, more to tell later...

Right, my shift behind the wheel is done, we tend to short shifts, somewhat lengthens the drives, but we rather keep fresh eyes and hands behind the wheel.

Sorry, I had more shots of the Twentiest on stage, and the Red Room full of band and gear, but the former were too dark to make anything out, and the latter, I have no clue, but we did have a few wobbly pops after the show...

Brakes started misbehaving this AM, so we hit the Midas, pads and such all good, they figure a bit of rotor warp, we'll be dealing with that before leg 2 in May, since we have to go through the Rockies twice.

The van has been a real trooper for three years, we try and baby her as much as we can too. 15 passenger GMC Savanna, 2001 with some 330000km of which we've done a bit more than 30000. We took out the last two rows of seats, built a platform in that area. It's a bit of a tight fit, but the singer has slept up there. I'll have to post some pics of the van too.

Speaking of pics, two more, the guitar players rig and the drummers kit:
IMG_20160423_241342718.jpg IMG_20160423_241326630.jpg
The head isn't his usual, his was being temperamental so he borrowed this one. It's got a pre amp tube, where his own does not. I really like the tone he's getting, he's on the fence, looked at his eq, dialed in a little bass, and took the scoop out with the contour, and he's happier. But it loves his mxr boost...

I don't know squat about drums, I can hear his kit, so to me, it's a good one.

Found a pic I forgot about, The lead singer for the Twentiest uses a skateboard as his pedal board:
IMG_20160422_213743130.jpg

Anyways, time to run, send a text to Mrs Tedious and sew another patch on the front panel of my kilt.

Here in Hamilton, since the brakes got checked, it's been just fine, so maybe a rockor something got dislodged.

I got a nice surprise:
IMG_20160423_175908487.jpg
While I was dealing with Midas, the boys found this. I'll explain, one of Mrs. Tedious hobbies is collecting rubber ducks, and one of my husbandly duties is to increase her collection every tour. So the guys grabbed this one. Sweet!

So the venue is trippy, judge for yourselves:
IMG_20160423_180342998.jpgIMG_20160423_181139011.jpg IMG_20160423_172036833.jpg IMG_20160423_171919796.jpg IMG_20160423_171821767.jpg
So a selection of exterior shots, the interior is two floors stage upstairs, the last exterior shot shows the patio we loaded through.

And on to the interior:
IMG_20160423_171717513.jpg IMG_20160423_171720749.jpg IMG_20160423_171726616.jpg IMG_20160423_171733967.jpg IMG_20160423_171742990.jpg IMG_20160423_171800466.jpg IMG_20160423_171830824.jpg IMG_20160423_171842040.jpg
And further proof this is not a Basscliff gig report, while posting this, I had a pair of tacos, and forgot to photograph them.

More to come!

Artificial Dissemination - sound check. Jamie, the drummer is also the promoter, and they are going on tour as well. We have a bunch of dates together before they continue eastt while we start the trek home. Jamie and Shawna (guitar player) are great folks, our place to stay tonight, and they feed us, including the vegetarian in the band. And Jamie is [expletive deleted] funny.

So, third time pays for all, drummer broke two sticks but lumber was flying fast and furious the whole set. Despite breaks and drops tho, we kept it solid. One little miscue, we dropped one sing on the fly, and we didn't have (but will in the future) a consensus on if that affected the next tuning check. But we averted any potential miscue, so no harm done.

Pretty good turn out, but the room makes it feel full, $145, full door again, and a coupla pizzas and some beer, lousy beer, but musicians cabt be choosers right? And the venue was pouring nothing but Micros, so I had my fill of good beer at the show (and they were excellent).

Missed getting the shot of the remaining crowd, turned to talk to the drummer, turned back and they were all filed out.

So we might have played a Matinee today, but we've done Sunday Slamfest the last two trips, it's fun, but we both an interview and a show later, three performances seems greedy, but most of us have family or friends in the area, so we'll try catching up with some of them.

Van pics to come, and of course the show. Glad to see the feedback delayed the last couple days, hope it means you've all been working!

That last venue is super cool. Looks like that show popped off too.

Yep, as soon as I checked in on FB I started getting messages from guys we've played with about how cool the venue was. Audience was really good, enjoying themselves, some compliments from the guys in Gag Order, always nice to get comps from your peers...

A coupla van photos:

Every time I pack it, I have more room. This is a good thing, I may upgrade my cabs, if this remains a constant.

Still wearing the evidence of 'the shortcut.' We discussed washing her, but we figure that will just make the rain happen, Sunny today, we may be on to something...

Our bobble collection, and an action shot of starting the trip into the Big Smoke.

I lined up dinner with my brother and his wife, BBQ and bourbon joint, mouth is watering already...

Now I have to figure if I should take a picture of food not served by the venue...

Lol, too late, it was good though, had a Maple Bacon Old Fashioned to boot, excellent... Sorry about the lack of pics, I literally inhaled it all, pulled pork, andouille sausage, corn bread, all of it.

Another old friend promoting tonight's show. Also providing crash space. A previous lineup did a short tour out this way like 8 years ago, and he put us on then, great guy.

So time for venue pics:

Tonight my backline is provided:

Never played a Mark Bass head, part and parcel of the decision to go with it. Sound check for the first band has passed while I've been typing this, sounds good.

An hour or so until I need to schmooze and such, so I'm off to:

Dragged in, the drummer was in the same band as the promoter back in the day. Another guy from that band is in it too, he couldn't make it tonight, but we'll be staying with him Tues and he'll be playing with them Friday.
