Squier Affinity Precision PJ or Vintage Modified Precision PJ?

Squiers, of all types (like most if not all lower priced basses), can vary in quality quite a bit from bass to bass, even in the same series. I've played so-so VM's and an incredible Infinity, and vice/versa so don't assume . If AT ALL possible play the individual bass before you buy. That's the only way to be sure you are getting a really good one, no matter which series. I bought an infinity for a friend (used) in mint condition w/pearloid PG, new strings and a pro set up for $75 that was extraordinary. I'd recommend used, given the your budget. I also have a VM P5 that is very nice, but tried one out that was blah. If you aren't experienced enough to tell the difference, maybe ask a more seasoned bassist to go shopping with you! Good luck!

I am about ready to go pick up one of the newer black Affinity PJ basses from a dude on craigslist. He says it is like new. Talked him down to $130. I have read so many good reviews on them that I just have to check it out.

Awesome, I'd like to hear your thoughts on it! I am planning to wait until I can head to a music store out of town to play a VM, but nonetheless would like to hear your thoughts on the newer Affinity PJs (I think the one I tried out at GC was in fact one of their newer models).

I couldn't agree more. I ordered mine online with the idea to return if the body or neck stank as everything else is more or less bolt on.

Not sure, but I'm guessing the tolerances on the parts don't vary too much, unless the bass arrives broken. How much it needs to be tweaked once it's out of the box is where its at. Seems like the VM/CP is made with just a bit better material maybe?

Yeah, the dude pretty much flaked out on me. It's a bummer. I might have to just give up and drive an hour or so to the nearest GC to test one out. lol

Well, I went to a Long & McQuade today far out if town, and to my surprise they had the VM there. I tried it out, and I've come to a decision. I'm picking the Affinity. Just something about it when I picked it up at the GC called to me. I didn't feel that with the VM, I didn't quite enjoy it as much as the Affinity. I know it has better pickups and all, but I think I'm going to go with the Affinity as my choice. Who knows, maybe someday I'll get that VM when it feels right.

That is exactly what you should have done. You played them both and picked the one you liked best. That is always the best way to do it.
