Squier Jaguar Short Scale Club Part 2

Too keep this thread on track, I am a bit unhappy with the raw, unrefined sound of this bass (as well as wanting more booty).

What I am looking for is a smoother, more refined pickup.

Has anyone tried the Nordstrand? How is its midrange?

As I stated previously I've tried replacing the P pickup with SD Antiquity and Bart 8S but since I don't use the bridge pickup I just disconnected it.

The SD didn't have as much high end as the OEMs and the Bart had less mids than the OEM.

I found that changing the strings to Labella Tapes (my personal favorite) left something to be desired so I switched back to the OEM pickups and it's much better for my purposes.

I haven't tried Nordstrands since the OEM P worked out so well for me.

What's your definition of "refined"?

Your description sounds like Barts to me. The Barts I've used sound to me like they have a dip in the mids which equates to a tone where the lows and highs are more dominant. The adjective I use to describe their tone is sophisticated.

I checked out a Rockbass Corvette SS review video and IMO the Barts can do close to that, with roundwounds. YMMV.

Just remembered, I used to use EMGs a lot and they can cop pretty close to that tone, especially with onboard EQ.

The Bart 8S has a strong lower midrange resonance when fitted in a full-scale. Did it sound that way to you in the Jag? Did the mid-scooped sound pinched to you?

I am currently pondering what the AERO Type-3 can do for me.

Here's my heavily modified Jag, in Royal Crown Purple from ReRanch. The Preamp is a Bart 2 band.

Yah. It's a regular set of J pups. I'll fess up and admit I did this more for looks and chuckles than anything. The neck pickup is looking to be more trouble than it's worth. The magnetic pull on the strings requires the pickups be set almost flush with the body, or the action unacceptably high. But I have rather soft TI strings on it. A stiffer string might let me set the pups better. But I'm happy with it. It turned out better than I had hoped. I succeeded in making myself chuckle every time I walk past it, and it sounds and plays very nicely.
{edit} As for the Alumitones? The P is impressive. A very pleasant, dirty grit. Perfect for blues, roots or such. The J's? Not so much, and they are quickly overwhelmed by the P.

Well, it's a nice job. I know the feeling, I get a smile every time I look at both of mine.
