I tried one of these basses out briefly instore the other day, I was really really surprised with the tone, big and round. Although I got the impression that in a band it would just get lost.

haven't played it in a full volume band setting yet, but i've recorded with it a bit -- it sits really nicely in a mix.

I'm excitedly waiting on one from a TB'er. I was planning on replacing the bridge and possibly the tuners and pickup (I might DS it, depends on how I like the stock one), but now that I've seen your neck refinish I'm going to have to do it on mine! It looks so nice, I always thought the neck color was a little too light.
Can you give me some pointers on refinishing the neck? This will be my first time doing it, I looked at ReRanch's website but anything you have to add about this specific bass would be helpful.

you're in for a treat.
No specific advice about the refin -- ask any questions you might have on the Reranch forum. Those guys are gracious and incredibly knowledgeable. Oh, and finishing a neck is about the easiest refinishing you can do; it takes patience, but it's a damn sight easier than a body refinish!
p.s.: what aftermarket bridge are you considering?
I was thinking just a Gotoh, I hadn't made up my mind yet, but I'm pretty sure I don't want the two-saddle dealie. Got one in mind?
nope, haven't given it much thought. I've got the action and intonation pretty good, which is more or less all I require from a bridge. the Gotoh bent-plate wouldn't be a major upgrade, IMO.
If I was going to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading, i might go with the GFS ABM-alike: http://store.guitarfetish.com/ovtopmobabrs.html
Had one on an SX P and I liked it a lot.
I've had mine for two weeks now and absolutely LOVE it. The playability and look are awesome and after tweeking my 7-band eq on my Mesa Bass 400+ it cuts, booms and thuds all at the same time. I did replace the bridge with a stock Allparts Fender replacement bridge....then drilled through to be able to use the existing string through ferrules. Gonna get a telebass bridge cover for it on Friday. I play fingerstyle rock and the tone I'm getting is big, thick but still defined. Sounds great...I was considering the Darkstar treatment and may still do it in the future but if you have any eq knowledge you can most definitely get a highly workable rock tone with the stock mudbucker.

yeah....the original two barrel bridge plate is string through.
I really don't think it's necessary to replace the bridge BUT...you can't intonate the stock bridge 100%. You can intonate it close enough for rock....it just bugged me that I couldn't intonate it 100% so I replaced it.

I am having my Fender '51 RI refinished, so I figured, what the hell, why not try that neck? It fits....but like most Squiers, there is a slight (like 1/32" on the bass side) neck gap when you put on a real Fender neck. I also had to shim it to get the action within spec (7/64" at 17th fret). So I don't know about an Allparts or Warmoth, but a fender neck will fit. The other issue is that these necks have a "square" heel -- not rounded like a j-bass or p-bass neck. So make sure the replacement neck you buy has the square heel. Final thing -- the neck radius will be different -- the Squire neck is I think a 9.5", the Fender '51 RI neck is 7.5".
I have/had a Wilkinson compensating bridge on my '51 RI -- it would not work on the Squier TB. The saddles were too small and the plate holes did not match up for the screws or for the strings.

Have 2 gigs tonight and tomorrow so that will be the real test!!!

I use an SVT 4 Pro biamped with lows going to an Ampeg PR-410 and highs to a Mesa Boogie 4x10 and I can get the TB dialed in really, really nicely. It really does pack a wallop, but it takes some time spent with the EQ. For added fun I'll direct out to the PA with two 18" McCauley subs 
It's much harder to get it to sound good through my Ampeg V4 with vintage 2x15....it sounds exactly like a muddy old telecaster bass through the vintage rig, hehe, imagine that!

subcribed, I have one of these, I think the playability, look and overall comfort are great. I'm still trying to EQ in the sound or get a darkstar when I get the money. I have to get rid of the stock srings before I'll know what's really going on. I'm a nickel guy, but maybe nickel sunbeams won't work as well as Hi beams. Any thoughts?
Well I put a set of my usual Ernie Ball Slinkies (105-50), Gave it a bit of a tweak and played 75% of lastnights gig on it... It's waaay cool!!!!
Have to drop the bass and boost the treble a little on the SVTII but there was no mud to be found, Just thick, clear, booming bass!
I must have been rocking out more than usual lastnight as I have a big swollen lump on my right wrist from hitting against the body...
It's a keeper... More details after tonights show.
