Squier "Perfect Fit Replacement Parts" Mega thread

Can anyone recommend tuners for my squier affinity jazz bass? The ones i have at the moment are those silly closed box tuners
Hipshot ultralights. There is no decent drop in replacement. You will be left with some exposed screw holes.

A lot of guys fill the exposed holes with dowel, which I don't personally like If it was me, I'd just put the screws back into the exposed holes. Quick easy and Phillips screw heads look better than a mismatched dowel.

Are you sure the Ultralites will fit? And if so, which size?

I ask because the Affinity tuners @4 string mofo is looking to replace have a considerably narrower string post, compared to the usual Squier open-gear tuners. (1/2" posts which can be replaced by the HB7, BT7, and HB6-1/2" machines) Specifically, they're like these…

I even took a bit of time to look at these up-close when I was at Guitar Center the other day. They're super-tiny! ;)

Reactions: 4 string mofo
Just acquired a 1984 SQ serial number Squier MIJ Precision. Seeing how those particular Squiers were some of the best of the best, I do want to change the pickups and maybe a new bridge as well. The solid white pickguard has got to go too! Anybody had any dealings with these particular Squiers as far as changing out the pups, pots and bridges? Just would like to know what may fit as far as bridges primarily. The tuners have a little aged look to them, so I am going to leave those alone for now!

I just ordered this 87 MIJ Squier jazz.

Do these accept Fender/allparts/warmouth, or other Fender-type necks? I'd like to put a maple board P neck on it. I've heard some Korean Squiers have odd dimensions and I don't know about these old Japanese Squiers.

Does simply enlarging the holes work? The center will be the same, but the intended where the string contacts the tuner would be pushed out. The string would have to bend at the nut slightly.
Seems to me yours are 1/4". The new post would be 3/8". That's 1/8" bigger. Divide that by two =1/16" shift sideways. Not an issue and your eyes wouldn't tell the difference from a foot away.

This seems like an appropriate place to ask this, I have a Squier P special neck (1.5" nut width) with a stripped truss nut.

What's a reasonable price for it? I have it at $75 right now but I just pulled that out of nowhere.

Would $25 to $50 worth of parts and work get it back to proper working order? I, for one, wouldn't pay much more than $100 to $125 for a working "Standard" neck, what with the extra work that will come with trying to install it on…well, just about anything! :banghead:

On a related note, I'm trying to wrangle a deal on a Squier Standard Black & Chrome P-Bass Special with a local seller. (if I can get it, the body will most-assuredly show up here on the TB Classifieds) As great as it would be to get an inexpensive neck with an already-painted headstock, I'm not looking forward to sanding down the heel. But unless it's miraculously smaller-than-normal, it won't fit into the pocket of a Blacktop Jazz project I'm working on.

The same thing happened on my previous project. I got a used Black & Chrome P-Special through GC, but the neck wouldn't fit onto a Mighty Mite body without some modification. Rather than permanently alter the neck or body, I just returned it to my local GC.

I'll let this thread know how it works out and what, if any, steps need to be taken to make it fit.

i have a Squier Pro-tone P/J. it has a rosewood, J-size neck, and i have and SX P-sized maple neck laying around. I prefer P size to J and am considering a swap. Any idea if the sizing is compatible?

Was that question leveled at me or the forum as a whole? (Please say "ME"! :hyper:) Because if you're contemplating selling the neck, I'm definitely interested! I could even kill two birds with one stone…getting a Jazz-spec neck with a black-painted headstock for my next parts-bass project AND finding out if the ProTone Series drifted from Fender specs like the Standard Series did.

Unfortunately, I can't say I know if it'll fit a Fender-sized body (technically, a Mighty Mite), but I'd happily report my results. If it's an easy drop-in and bolt-down, that'd mean standard Fender necks and Vintage Modifieds, basically anything I've mated to a Mighty Mite body, should be able to mount onto the ProTone body.

As far as putting a neck from an SX onto a ProTone body, you'd have to tell us if it works or not. I've heard there are occasional discrepancies.

The best advice I got was how filling the screw-holes on the neck would be a better choice than doing further routing on the body (assuming the neck fits, but the screws & holes won't line up). Some wood glue, some dowels big enough to fill MOST of the hole (you need a teensy-tiny bit of room for the glue to fill & set properly), some fine-grit sandpaper and a little bit o' patience is all it takes. Then, you're free to fit the neck in and re-drill new guide holes. DON'T GO SO DEEP AS TO PUNCTURE THROUGH THE FRETBOARD. The neck bolts should do the rest!
