So I started this thread - I HATE UPS!!! | Page 6 | TalkBass.com - a couple weeks ago after I had a Squier VM PJ bass damaged in shipment from Musicians Friend to me. I have since resolved the issue and have received my replacement. Since the one I ordered was a “scratch and dent” they didn’t have any more left, so for 20 bucks more I ended up getting the Troy Sanders Sig Jaguar model, “scratch and dent – level 2”. The shipment arrived in one piece! One beautiful silver burst piece! Loving it so far and I thought I would give a quick rundown of my first impressions from a total amateur standpoint.
I was immediately impressed with the looks. It seems like the silver-burst is either a love it or hate it type of thing, personally I love it. The plastic was still on the pups and pick guard so it was basically in almost new condition. No scratches, no dings. The first thing that I noticed was that when the control knobs are all turned to off, one of them doesn’t line up properly, it’s like way off, but I’m assuming that will be an easy fix. So, I plugged it in to tune up and man oh man do those tuners feel CHEAP! Very thin and seems like they could just break right off at the slightest bump. I think when I get it set up and strings changed, new machines are definitely in order. Other than that, I was extremely happy. Set up out of the box seems OK and(once again as a total rookie)the tone is awesome. I'm still just kind of messing around with it, but the “active” bass boost doesn’t seem to make much of a difference, but hey, what do I know?
Now, compared to the Epi Gothic Tbird that I came to loathe in a very short time, this thing is l total relief. The neck dive and just the overall weight were making me miserable. It’s like I had to actually try to hold up the neck and play at the same time and my left shoulder was really starting to feel it. I had to go back and make sure the Jag was not a short scale or something like that. It just felt so much better to play while standing and sitting. Almost no dive and the contoured body was awesome compared to the square angle of the Gothic. I did get quite used to resting my thumb on the little ridge that the Epi has above the strings, but not a big deal at the moment. Side by side the Squier bridge is closer to the ass end of the body, not sure if it distributes the weight better but the ease of playing for me is way improved. I was actually able to play through a few songs without having to look down at my fretting hand. With the Tbird this was impossible for me. Now my only problem is, I have had the Epiphone listed for sale for a few weeks and haven’t had too many inquiries. Do I keep it? Or drop the price even more and keep trying to get rid of it? I had just bought a nice gig bag, but the VM seems to fit good enough into the offset shape of the Tbird bag. I took the bag off the listing and dropped the price to $200 OBO. Maybe I'm just asking too much still, but you know im going to get low-balled anyways.
In a nutshell, I am totally stoked with the new baby and I think she will be around a while.
