SQUIER VINTAGE MODIFIED?

i've been looking for a budget model jazz bass to fix up for a while now.

the reason for this being a few years ago i got in a car accident rendering my warwick thumb BO in two, and unrepairable. but the electronics are still working. (fortunately, insurance bought me a new bass, and i got to keep the wrecked one, SCORE!)

so i've been looking at the VM jazz bass and highly concidering it. but is swapping the pickups all i should do?

i dont know much about modding basses but i love the look of this bass and the sound of my warwick.

so... anyone have any siggestions?

It's decent bass. Go for it. I would also look at some used sites for some MIM jazzes cheaper since you are just gutting it anyway.

I thought I'd mention that I own the fretless version of the vintage modified and I love it. It plays great and sounds pretty good for the price.

I do understand why you would want to change the pickups, mine get a bit of noise from mechanical interferance.

Which pickups are you thinking of putting in? I changed the pickups in my G&L JB-2 recently toSTK0J2B Basslines which are very nice. Lots of volume and very low noise, great for all styles IMO.

I guess if the question is how to install them yourself, well I'd say if you don't know how to solder, just get a luthier to do it for you, it's not that expensive and it will be much easier. I tried changing the pickups myself once and I think I must have crossed a wire, I ended up with a weird wah sound when both pickups were at full volume, kinda cool but unexpected.

I thought I'd mention that I own the fretless version of the vintage modified and I love it. It plays great and sounds pretty good for the price.

+1 on the fretess. I bought a set of mid-90's MIA Jazz pickups as I didn't like the stock Squier pickups on gigs. Sounds amazing now and the upgrade cost me $50 or $60.

im gonna be using warwick MEC gold jzz pickups cuz im looking for a stage backup to my thumb bolt-on and want a similar sound but still something different to play

I have a Vintage Modified fretless as well. You might want to play it with the stock Duncan Designed pups first for a while. I decided to leave them in, they really aren't bad sounding at all, imo. Just make sure you adjust them to optimize the tone/sound. Give them a try.

I bought one from GC on their 4th of July sale for $204 bucks, not bad!! I'm just learning bass going between it and guitar. I also just bought a 2008 American Jazz bass, but I find myself playing the cheap Squier more for some reason. Anyone ever use the GFS pick-ups in their basses? They seem like a reasonable upgrade.
