Squier VM 70's Jazz - Remove the gloss finish?

I picked up one of these on the cheap, nice bass.....best value for money bass I've played in a LONG time.

One thing that bugs me is the finish on the body. It has a clear glossy finish, and i'd much prefer a natural finish.

Is this possible to achieve? Strip the gloss finish and leave it as a natural wood finish?

stripper and a scraper, then sand to the finish you desire, maybe use tung or danish oil to protect from dirt and climate. Pretty simple job, just takes some time and innitiative...go get em

Thanks for the help guys, but i'm having a bit of trouble.

I've used Citristrip before, and have put a coat on this bass but after almost 48 hours and reapplication, it seems to be having no effect on the clear coat.

Any suggestions? Try a different stripper?

Hello,

I have this same model bass and I'd really like to refinish it to black to get that sweet black & maple look. Do I need to remove the polyurethane gloss?

Also, one time I dropped the bass on to concrete (need straplocks...) so there is a small chip accompanied by some small half- inch cracks on the finish, right on the side of the bass near the input jack. Does that change anything?

Apparently if you are painting over, you can simply paint over the finish........

Paint chip, if you wish to fix it, I have no idea, but you could simply just paint over it

The paint chip is completely through the finish, as in the bare wood is visible. Still OK to just paint over it?
