Squier vs. Squier II

A few years back I picked up a Fender Squier II P-bass at a pawn shop for a little over $100. It plays great, sounds great, but I'd never heard of a Squier II series. Can't find much on it online about it, what made the Squier II series different from the Squiers?

I own a Squier II precision - they're really nothing special, but I keep mine for sentimental reasons - it was the first bass I ever owned - the bodys are plywood and lack contours - more of a slab design, which could be a turnoff for some people, but the neck on mine is to DIE for. I've considered putting it onto a better P body. Mine also has aftermarket EMG PU's.

The body on mine was almost destroyed last year, the tailgate latch on my truck failed while moving. Lost a Samick semi-hollow body, the Squier II, and a Traynor head, not a good day at all. The Squier II's body was in two pieces, and I tried gluing it back together, looks horrible but sounds the same... but my body isn't plywood. Not sure what it is, it looked almost like cedar, had a reddish hue. I The neck is nice, if not a little banged up, road rash and all. I figure it was made sometime in the early 80's but I can't find a serial number on it anywhere. I wondered if someone slapped the neck on another body before I bought it. Maybe they just changed woods part way through production. No telling...
Added DiMarzio PUs to it right after I bought it, been a great instrument for what it's been thru.

That sounds like this one, it's got a yellow and black badly worn "inspected by" sticker on the neck plate, I'm sure there were more once upon a time. What time period were these made? The lacquer on the neck is a nice yellow, I'm guessing from age and maybe florescent light.
The rectangular string tree and gold lettering made me start to wonder if they were sold overseas exclusively.

What serial number is yours? mine red on i just recently got doesn't have a ser # on the headstock and has a 2ply white pikguard, likin the rectangular tree but not the bow in the neck, that i am still (days later) trying to work out. p
