I got a Deluxe Jazz V, it sounds absolutely amazing with the stock pickups & electronics. BUT...with the pups solo'd, the hum kind of gets on my nerves. How can I keep it from humming? Or is it pretty much get humbuckers and problem solved...but you don't get the same single coil sound...just deal with it... ???
how about a reverse hum cancelling pup for the bridge? How does that work, anyway?

I have the same problem...it is the single coil that's doing it...

a solid shielding job will help, but not eliminate completely the solo'd-pickup hum.

if you do go hum-cancelling...go with a split-coil, as this will sound the most single-coil like...if you go stack, it will sound a bit darker...

don't just change one...otherwise, the neck pickup will not balance with the bridge and IT will buzz always (except on bridge solo of course)

remember, these pickups are the size of 4-string jazz pickups...(measure b4 you buy)...

Yep, like PilbaraBass says, a really good shielding job will usually diminish the hum.

Get some copper shielding tape (stewmac.com) and use it to shield the electronics cavity and pickup cavities (you can even wrap the sides of the pickup in the tape to help with shielding). Also, if you make sure the bottom of the pickup's magnet touches the copper tape them run a ground wire from the copper to the bridge it can help diminish the buzz.

If that's not enough of an improvement, some companies are making very low-noise single coils these days, you might want to look into some of them.

wow, I'm such a moron...haven't thought about the shielding...in fact, I haven't even opened the controls cavity yet; although I've had the bass for about 3 weeks but only got to jam out on it like twice...
I'll check that & report back later...

there's a suspect black paint in the control cavity (could be shielding, I haven't test it). And the pickup cavities? well, that's a mystery to me as I haven't checked it out.
