Squire or SX

Hey, I've recently been thinking about getting a Precision or Jazz style bass, I'm not really sure yet. I was wondering who, Squire or SX, makes the better bass.

I'm looking a bass I can play around with and take to jams (I'd rather not take my ATK out of my house). In regards cost, it seems that SX would be cheaper, but is the quality any good?

Another question: Do either the Squire or SX have the same neck pocket dimensions as Fender necks? Cause I was planning on replacing the neck with a Fender neck.

Yeah, search for Squire and Essex. You'll find lots.

I'd personally choose the SX hands down.

The Squier neck pocket (and obviously, neck heel) is a good 1/16" larger than those on the Fender MIM basses. You'll have an enormous gap in the neck pocket if you put a Fender neck on your Squier.

I've played a few Squires and a couple SXs. I'd go SX hands down (unless it was a vintage Squire)

+1 on the Squier Vintage Modified basses. However my overall experience has been that Squier is better than SX so my vote is definitely towards the Squier line.

Unlike KevinMoore73, I found a Fender neck fit perfectly in a Squier body on a recent project bass I put together.

Since I've yet to play an SX, I can't comment on which is better. I think the new Squiers are a great deal, though.

I'd choose SX simply for the fact that I've found the wood to be better on an SX than the Squier. You can upgrade any piece of hardware you're not satisfied with, but it's a lot harder (and pretty much pointless) to try to upgrade the body on the squier. Just my 2 cents.

The SX will, however, usually require a setup before it will be comfortable to play. But I'd expect the squier would as well. I have an SX precision as a backup and i'm pretty happy with it.

Unlike KevinMoore73, I found a Fender neck fit perfectly in a Squier body on a recent project bass I put together.

Perhaps my issue what that I was replacing a Squier J-Bass neck with a Fender P-Bass neck. My understanding what that the heel on the J and P necks was supposed to be the same. I chalked it up to minor differences between Squier and Fender.

With the Fender neck, I could stick a credit card on each side of the neck pocket with a little room to spare. The Squier neck doesn't let air molecules in.

That's a bummer. Maybe I was lucky with my Fender/Squier match up, but I thought Squier necks were supposed to match Fender specs.
