stage sound - first gig

hi guys thanks for the replies.

taking on board what people have said about the 40w amp, i’m expected to bring an amp and other than that will only hear myself via stage monitors. So my budget is very low but i spotted an ashdown mag 300w evo iii combo (old amp!) for cheap on marketplace. is it worth getting this for the gig? thanks!
That 300w Ashdown will be a good gigging work horse. A couple things to keep in mind:
- A 300 watt solid state amp is not nearly as loud as a 300 watt tube amp. But, it will have reasonable volume for gigging - 300 tube is an awful lot. IMO 40 watts solid state is much too little.
- An old solid state amp with a ceramic 15” speaker will be heavy. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Older solid state amps have durable and warm power sections. And, the older heavier speakers typically have a nice low end. I personally only use old or old-style solid state amps and I can easily afford whatever gear my heart desires.
- Since you’re on a tight budget, your compromise should be putting up with some weight. Light gear that actually sounds as heavy gear is kind of expensive.
