Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

ok, this guy reviews it..

I bought one myself since I'm new to this, i kinda like it. I hoped it would sound more like an Ampeg baby bass.. and it sounds more like someone said earlier, which is like halfway between a fretless bass and an upright bass. I still like the sound of it, though, but I begin to notice see its limitation (c'mon, at that price you can't expect much). I guess when I'll know more about technical stuff like pickups and strings (and other basses), I will be able to tell you what's lacking, and what's good about it.

The 9v battery is for the active output. It gives the power to amplify the pickup signal to the output.. and also for the headphone output, and the input. It activates only when you plug something to the output.
hope that helped

I can't see the point really - what are you going to use it for - seriously!?

So it's not good enough for a replacement DB and it's not good enough to use as your main/only instrument - so are you taking several basses on a gig...:hmm:

It's not a cheap EUB - it's an expensive "toy"....:hmm:

Through the kindness of their hearts, my lovely wife and beautiful son just gave me a Stagg EDB series double bass as a birthday gift (after years of hearing me pine for a Ned Steinberger). I'm very pleased and appreciative.

I have a question concerning stands... Is there a stand out there similar to the NS design, which may be used for the Stagg? Something (like the NS stand) that would not just be a device for resting the bass, but would function as an actual brace/holder, allowing for complete accessibility? I want, on stage during performances, to be able to switch back and forth from my bass guitar to the DB "on the fly," as it were. Or, could there be a conversion apparatus idea out there somewhere?

Check out the Palatino Megathread. Those crazy guys (me included :) have devised several stand solutions, some that might work for the Stagg. But having played the Stagg, you may have to actually attach something to the bass more permanently.

I have a gallery for the modification I did to the Palatino Invalid Link Removed. This mod involves using a drum stand.

THANK YOU! Intriguing design displayed at the Flickr site. Really ingenious! What modification specifically was done to the bass itself...what type of hardware/fixture was implanted and how was it done?

Well, the Palatino already has a hole there for the retractable stand, unlike the Stagg which is in the body. So no modification was necessary other than finding a drum cymbal stand with a matching thread that fit.

The Stagg's stand is in the body at the bottom, so this would rule this modification out. You could take a drum mounting system, say for toms, and use the bracket and stand system from one of them. But as I said, this would require a permanent fixture to the bass itself.

I'm not sure if you could perhaps adapt the stand at the bottom of the Stagg EUB to perhaps sit in a snare drum stand which has a lower profile than a standard cymbal stand, so wouldn't stand as tall as a result. Whether this would be sturdy enough I couldn't say. The Stagg does have a long body profile, so perhaps this might be undoable/unusable?

Just noticed this is now a Megathread :smug:

I've just played this Stagg's EDB, but I still have doubts.

* 30 min playing at the GC: I think is not enough to feel the bass properly.
* If I buy it, it will be my first EDB, so I'll use it more for studying.
* Here in my city in Brazil is pretty hard to find a EDB, so it might be my only option.
* I liked the sound. However I have no way to compare to other models of EDB.
* the price is OK.

Should I buy it?!

Thanks, Gracias, Merci, Danke! =)

Yes buy it. You won't find better for the money and they really are great.

Please measure the following distances:

Between the top nut and bridge: it's the vibrating lenght of the strings.

Between the bridge and strings anchors on the tailpiece.

With that we should be able to tell if regular DB strings would fit.

That said, you didn't reply to those two questions:
That said, what don't you like in your current strings?
