I don't know how George Lucas managed to make the original three so delightful, but it's clear that he's not going to do that again.
He didn't direct them! (or rather he didn't direct Empire or Jedi). After the first star wars movie Lucas quit directing, and went into the business side. He didn't direct again for 20 years. He's just not good at it.
I saw him speaking at a conference a couple of years ago (I knew he was short, but the guy could be an extra for Snow White - like <5". The Simpsons episode ISN'T exagerating). Funiest thing was when he started going on about how the technology was just a tool for storytelling - this was to a room of FX guys, and WE all hated him for screwing up the story with FX.
He said there would be TV spinnoffs, based in the SW world, but that SW itself was done. It's about Vader - you've seen him be born, rise, fall, restoration, death. It's done.
