Static in Tweeters?

While doing sound check last night we noticed an odd static-like sound coming from the tweeters whenever I played the bass. It was not there for the vocals or other instruments and did not show up when playing recorded music. The static is present on both sides.

We run a Peavey FX2-16 mixer to a Peavey IPR2 5000 amp then out to Peavey SP2BX mains. I run my bass through tuner>comp>DR. J Sparrow DI then into the mixer. I have played through this setup before several times with no issues.

I tried swapping out the Sparrow for two different Sansamp DI's with no change (other than it didn't sound as good ).

Anyone run into this before?

Is this continuous static or just popping/crackling sounds on certain notes?

I've had the latter happen with bass cabs using Foster tweeters when the power amp was seeing a 2 ohm load (the amp was spec'ed for 2 ohms).

The static was not continuous. Just the low notes on the bass caused the issue. Up in the non-money frets it seemed to be OK. I would guess that bass is being sent to the tweeters when it is not supposed to be, just seems weird that both crossovers might break at the same time.

We are running 8 ohms a side on the amp.

Did you change channels on the mixer to rule out a bad channel, or ..
did you cut the HF levels on that channel?
It's not your crossovers, or you'd have noticed it with other instruments.
My guess is something in your rigs signal path is causing the issue.
Start at the mixer and work backwards - since you've already narrowed it down the bass.
Try a different channel. Same noise? Then it's NOT the mixer..

Remove pieces-parts from your signal chain until it goes away and you've found the soure - its a process of elimination.

Once found,take corrective action.

Good call s0c9, didn't have a lot of time to troubleshoot it when it was set up. I will take a better look at it next time we play.
