Steely Dan

On "Classic Albums" on VH1 Classic the other night, they played the making of the Aja album. I recorded it and watched it twice. I love Steely Dan, but now I have even more respect and admiration for those guys. They got some killer session guys on their albums.

The part that blew me away in that documentary was the "Purdie Shuffle"! Oh my Gawd!!! Btw, also put me down for "Charlie Freak", and great and kinda sad tune. Also one of my faves.

Been a long-time fan, "Pretzel Logic", "Katy Lied" and "Royal Scam" for me are the holy trinity of the Dan, and Aja, well, that's a whole universe unto itself! The only Dan I wasn't too thrilled with was "Everything Must Go" which to me sounded like everything went. I also LOVE Fagen;s solo outings, especially "Morph The Cat" and "Kamakiraid" (a concept album about a road trip this guy takes in a late model Japanese steam-powered car with sattelite navigation and an onboard vegetable garden.

And it brewed coffee! :bassist:

Aja is one of the greatest albums of all TIME. Period.

My dog is named Aja.

If I had a daughter her name would be Aja.

Since your checking out the Dan, you'll want to checkout "Nightfly".

A certified classic and Donald Fagans 1st solo album.

If you ever get to a Dan concert, it's like sitting in the control room in the studio.

The sound is incredible...

Review of the Katy Lied LP:

"OY VEY. These boys are really off-the-wall, so enjoy 'em before all the dough they're making straightens 'em out. It happens to the best of sickies, y'know." -Andy McKaie

from the "Citizen..." box set booklet's liner notes:

"We are truly sorry about the delay in collecting and editing this material. We know you've been desperate to front-load the retail racks in time for the Christmas crush.
Unfortunately, we are dependent on certain obsessive fans and demi-cultish publications for the old photos, reviews, ads, etc., that will make this a fun package.

After many hours of tiresome telephone conversations with these collectors, the big envelopes finally arrived, most often in rough condition and/or stained with suspicious substances. We than began the tedious selection process punctuated by frequent breaks to recuperate from the violent humiliation of seeing how we looked in 1971, '72, '75, '78 and '81. Just imagine how you might feel if photos of yourself from the seventies (big stoner grin, greasy hair down to your scrotum, wearing a psychedelic flower shirt, a cowhide vest, extra wide Britannia corduroy bell-bottoms over shapeless Acme engineer boots) were plastered all over the public square."

re: outtakes

"one decent find was a somewhat lame experimental version of "Everyone's Gone To The Movies" that somehow survived storage in a damp, verminous locker for over 20 years. This might be added, not only for historical reasons, but also to give Flo & Eddie (who harmonized on the chorus) the proof they've always needed to back up their assertion that they worked with us in the "old days."

I like what Becker said before the tour.:
"We gave everybody charts, started to rehearse, and realeized that the charts were wrong. So, we had to give everyone tapes!"
Fagen:
"Why tour now? We've always wanted to hear what 'Babylon Sisters' sounded like live. Plus, we get to ride in private jets!"

I can't decide with of their albums are my fav steely dan album, all of these could be #1: Aja, Royal Scam, Gaucho and Two Against Nature. I'm not so much into the first few albums but there's at least a few really good songs on every album they've put out.

The Nightfly by Fagen is great too. :)

I love every Steeley Dan album, and solo recording both Fagen and Becker have made...

You may be surprised at how much of the guitar work was actually done by Becker...

And Fagen's sense of harmony is just unbelieveable. The harmony parts he writes are amazing. Check out "Maxine" on "The Nightfly"...wow...

It was the Dan that turned me onto Chuck Rainey. Peg is just such a good work out, although my rendition is merely a cod version compared to the master's. Rikki is great fun to play on fretless. A great band who only use the best musos (inc themselves) a permanent source of inspiration.
