Steely Dan

If you get a chance to see them now live, Check out guitarist Jon Herrington. He is one of the best I have seen in a long while. If you have the Dan's DVD with him playing on it, it doesn't do him justice. The DVD was filmed when he first joined the band.

His soloing is unbelievable now. He plays in and around the original solos but twists the melodically and harmonically with greats taste. He is like Houdini, getting himself all twisted then coming out right on que. One of the best shows in my life was Fagan with Herrington and Wayne Krantz on his Morph The Cat tour at Westbury Music Fair....the sound quality was like listening to a high end stereo....Herrington was outstanding.

His tone is awsome..he plays through Guytron amps...just beautiful.

Now back to Bass talk....Picks, plastic or tortise shell?

I'm kicking myself for not seeing the solo tour. I saw Steely in 2006 and 2007, but I think it would've been wiser to see Fagen solo, then the Dan because of an almost completely different playlist.

So, I just finished listening to 'Pretzel Logic' in its' entirety and I am now a Steely Dan fan. I had heard about them for years, but never gave them a listen. Boy, am I sorry! What a great album. Please tell me their others are this good. ;)

I'm a big Steely Dan fan. I have all the albums before the reunion. They are all great (the first is a bit dated imho and they hadn't hit their stride but it has some great songs on it).

As a bass player I consider their catalog a textbook in great basslines and bass tones.

Their lyrics are interesting but at times I feel they're too negative so I usually don't focus on them. They have a tendency to focus on the underbelly of the human experience.

They are one of my favorite artists and I consistently listen to their work

LOVE Steely Dan.
And this is the crazy part- We played Pretzel Logic as our prelude (walk in music) today in church!!!!!
No kidding -we did!!! LOL!!!!

Aja is the best IMO. Want to be a great "pop/jazz" player??? Learn that disc.

In fact, I'm putting back together my Steely Dan cover band- Steeling Dan.
I love playing their stuff.

I'm a huge Dan fan

I was practicing to their songbook today between Church services. I had to put the book away as my conscience was bugging me "you want to play songs by a band named after a sex toy?"

I wish they never revealed the name of the band, kinda ruins it for me

As far as Everything Must Go, I only liked "Pitzeleen" and "Lunch With Gina". LWG live is flat out wicked!

I think the new stuff is still tremendous music, especially in comparison to the crap on the radio now a days. I wish we would have had more Tom Barney in Two, but I think Everything must Go is a great CD. The title cut is a killer progression and "Lunch with Gina" kills. Thats a Cd you need to put away and come back too. I have a suspicion if you do it will really grow on you. Like all their stuff their are a ton of little parts hidden away on that CD. My overall favorite is still "Katy Lied" because it was so far ahead of it's time. I do have one question, how did Fagen and Becker get Wayne Shorter to play a better Solo on their stuff then any solo he does with Weather Report?

Speaking of sax players what about Cornelius Bumphus?

Unfortunately he died a few years ago.

He matched the Dan brothers in everyway, qwerkiness, musicianship, performance, and genius.

He spent most of his time playing in the subway in NY City...

does anybody toy with the idea of throwing together dream lineups for a Steely Dan album or tour? Here's one of mine!

Simon Phillips or David Garibaldi: drums
Anthony Jackson: bass
Larry Carlton: guitar
Greg Phillinganes: keys
Randy Brecker: trumpet
Branford Marsalis : alto sax
Chris Potter: tenor sax
Steve Kupka: bari sax
Robin Eubanks: trombone

(no preference for particular backup singers)

I haven't read through the thread, but I assume I'll agree with everything. I'm a big, big Dan fan.

On a side note, for those who really dig the Dan and don't have it, the 'New York Rock and Soul Review' disc is wonderful (I think I have that name correct). It was kind of a 'Blue Eyed Soul' sort of concert, with Michael McDonald, and Donald Fagan in the band.

It caused a BIG buzz when it came out in the early 90's, because Fagan did a couple of Dan songs, which from what I understand, was the first time head done any of those tunes live since the very early touring days.

It's a very cool disc....Boz Scaggs, McDonald, Fagan, Phoebe Snow, the Brigati brothers, and one of the most wonderful sounding J Bass recordings I've ever heard:D

That is a great CD Ken. But, just for giggles go listen to "Minute by Minute" on that disc. I don't have the original CD, so I can't remember who the Drummer was, but he TOTALLY LOST it on that track. That tune must change meter four times during that song. I can just see Fagen giving the poor guy dirty looks, or the whole band trying to get his attention. :D That CD has a killer version of Knock on Wood, and a great cover of Pretzel Logic among others.

I actually sub with a band that does that version of the tune. I never noticed the drummer being lost, but I'll have to give it a listen. It's a smokin' version in general.

The Revue rhythm section was Lincoln Schleifer bass and Dennis McDermott Drums. Corny Bumpus is on there too.
I don't think they were able to rehearse much for the NY Rock & Soul Revue, I think it was a benefit concert. The picture in the foldout shows everybody reading charts on stage.

Nah, there's a couple of posts you might take issue with.

...and I agree with you about the New York Rock & Soul Revue record. It came out at a time when fans were starved for anything/something 'new' by Fagen/Becker.
For some reason, though, I don't recall "Minute By Minute"...will have to re-visit it tonite.
