Steely Dan

I am going to see them on the 31st, can't wait.
My band plays:
Peg
Josie
Kid Charlamagne
Deacon Blues
Pretzel Logic
Rikki
Black Friday

I love how the bass line for Josie was doubled by guitar as shown on the "Making of Peg" DVD. It was cool seeing how much the sound changed when they dropped the guitar out.
I also love Chuck's tone on Asia. Who says you can't slap a P bass, his tone killed.

Bumping an OOOOLLLLDDD thread! gonna get flamed a bit for this, but to me SD Is EASILY the best band ever. So diverse and way more musically and lyrically sophisticated and humorous than anyone around. They combined/combine the elements of musical greatness like nobody else, including the Beatles.

I've seen them live 3 times.

Twice on the Rent Money tour.

Each time it's been a spiritual experience...

Agreed - Though I have to say I like material from the first 6 albums the best... The more recent stuff seems less... edgy to me. But man, anything off of those first 6 albums is freakin' epic...

And what a live band!!! If you have not seen them live, even if you aren't wild about the music, you MUST SEE THEM. Fattest/Tightest backline ever. EVER.

They were just here in Philly for two nights. The first night they played the songs from Aja, and the second night from Pretzel Logic. It was in a small theatre, and the sound was incredible. Ready Freddy Washington played a P Bass for the entire gig. He had a Smith as a back up but did not use it. He used an Eden rig for the gig. Harrington killed on guitar. I really liked his playing on the Two Against Nature DVD.

You gotta be kidding me! I had no idea they were in town, or I would have gone.
Theyre one of my favorite bands right now, one that I can plow through 40 songs on my ipod straight and never get tired of Fagen's vocals. And the tracks with rainey on bass are certainly a treat too!
Learning Peg and Home At Last is something i've spent the last couple of days doing, and it's been a blast. Long live the Dan.

They did the same thing here.

Freddy played a Fender Jazz at our two shows.

Small venue, wildest crowd I've ever seen, sound was spectacular!

Agree 100%.

True...& though I only vaguely recall seeing them when they were an actual working "band"...the youtube stuff from the Can't Buy A Thrill daze is pretty cool.

Check out some of Donald Fagan's solo stuff, it's pretty good too.
I still remember when The Nightfly came out...everyone I knew ran & bought LP ASAP! Finally, something/anything remotely associated with Steely Dan...and The Nightfly did not disappoint.

Another '80s album that had a Dan-ish vibe was Eye To Eye's debut. Gary Katz produced with a lot of The Royal Scam/Aja/Gaucho sidemen (& Rainey is the only bassist on Eye To Eye's debut).
