Steely Dan

I was wondering why people seem to pride themselves on bashing the new stuff. Admittedly, I hated Everything Must Go. But Two Against Nature is up there with Aja, maybe not in the bass department, but in everything else.

+1M, Everything must go is indeed lacking in many areas but behind aja, Two Against Nature is neck in neck with Gaucho as my second favorite

Bussed down to NYC from Toronto over the weekend just to watch them at the Beacon. It was sing-along/karaoke night as almost everyone up in the rafters was singing together with the Dan on their oldies as well as the newer stuff. Boy were they great (as always)! Fagen was his usual self - reminded me so much of Jack Nicholson.

I still have to come across a Dan album and a Dan song that I never liked. Since I've partly brain-washed my rap-loving nephews into loving rock-jazz by bombarding them with SD everytime they visit, I think I've made my small contribution to mankind.

Saw Steely Dan in L.A. Wednesday night. They played 2 hours non-stop. Freddie Washington was amazing. He and the drummer (whose name I forget) - just wow. The horn section should have been bowing to them at end (I'm biased, I supposed).

The band did Royal Scam (I think) and the Fez without Walter and Donald (at the beginning, didn't sound so great, actually, I guess that was the point).

They did FM, Aja, Peg, Josie, Third World Man, Kid Charlemagne, Gaucho, and a whole bunch of others, They did not do Dr. Wu, My Old School or Ricky.

I saw them a year ago at a smaller venue and they did play My Old School and Ricky (much less horn dependant, I think). Seemed like they were really trying to get the horn section to coalesce.

It was lots and lots of musicians in the audience, all ages. It was great to see a multi-ethnic, multi-age audience. Going to see Dylan was like visiting an old folk's home and going to see Robert Plant wasn't much better.

Steely Dan brought out the youth!

Because they are soooo cool.
