I dig pretty much every aspect of Stefan's playing, except the fact that he's buried in the mix. The only album that sounds really good bass-wise is Before These Crowded Streets. It could be better, but it's not bad. That album smacks of Warwick tone, and just a notch or two more would have been KILLER. Yep, Stefan and DMB both get thumbs up from me! 
I like his playing and I like DMB as well. I don't like Dave's voice but I'm getting used to it. I know that this happens to me a lot, where I'll really like a band musically, but their singer just "annoys" me. This holds true with groups like Primus, Rush, Led Zeppelin, and Rage Against the Machine. Even though I like these groups a lot (especially Led Zeppelin), I've had to get used to the "different" style of singing. I do like the new song by the way!
God i love his work on the song 41! Those little b slides he does at the end is awsome! Those people that dont think he is awsome need to set down and try to play some of his stuff and make it sound as good as he does!

In fact, one of my favorite bands, The Screaming Headless Torsos, has just released their newest cd & without Dean Bowman's vocals...actually, the band is now called Headless Torsos as this release is supposed to be instrumental.
FWIW, I like DMB, but if weren't for Carter/Lessard, I dunno, I've heard people as good as Dave in coffee bars(& IMO, Moore & Tinsley are just "OK").
Anyway, ONE week to go "for the masses"(weird, I know some that already have the new DMB).
My band opened for DMB at a place called Starlake Ampitheater about 3 years ago. I hated the band before I ever seen them live. And seeing them live changed that opinion. I hate them a lot worse now. That was the most boring 2 hours I had to sit though since Cats. Even couldn't appreciate it on a musician level.
But on a side note I do love Stef tone more that ALot of others.

Man how can another musician find them boring? You must have a hell of a band and must one hell of a bass player! Wow youre drummer must be a god can we please here your music? Empron's composition from SHT's debut, "Free Man" is one bad tune(IMO)...eh, Phatboi?

...no, the LIVE Torsos' album(which I bought as an import a few years ago)is NOT the new one. In fact, be aware that the LIVE cd is kinda "raw"(IMO, the studio disc has a happenin' mix/blend between the instruments).
The new one is instrumental...no Dean Bowman doin' his bebop-yodeling. The band is Fuze, Emphron, Gene Lake, & Daniel Sadownick.
You should be able to pick up the debut album at their website...Fuze also has a solo disc, Jazz Punk, that is kinda cool.
...I was rapping with a big DMB fan at the game tonight & he was telling about the new record...he's sayin' Glenn Ballard, the new producer, really trimmed the "fat" away from these tunes(no tune is over 4:00); no acoustic guitar, very little violin, very little sax solos, Beauford is playing more like John Bonham(not so much polyrhythmic as in the past), Lessard's bass parts were already formed by Ballard on a synth, & the band didn't jam on the tunes...they learned what Ballard/Matthews had written out. Most of what he was tellin' me is in the new(or soon-to-be released)issue of Rolling Stone.

Well, while most of you probably already know this but Steffan Lessard is a prty damn great bassist. He is technically great and he really grooves. He plays so smoothly and and some nice moves. He really knows how to make things work well, especially with the rhythms. Although he do3sn't do any crazy moves or anything he still remains one of the greats of today.
You want to see some great bass? Transcribe "The Space Between", it's on The new album. The little intricacies are freekin' great!
Hey there is some getting use to the new cd but i like it! Alot of things have changed in there sound but one thing stayed the same steffan still has that strong punchy ass bass tone! And i have figuerd out how he gets that its a combo of using the meyers sound cabs and a aphex unit! I thought they did great on snl!
I was the one that had the last steffan thread! He is the ****e! I think my fav bass song of his is 41! I love those little slides a grooves he does in the solo!
Did anyone catch DMB on MTV last night? Maybe it's my tv, but I think Steffan just gets buried in the mix. Other people have mentioned this already. How does he sound live? I might catch them in June when they come to Ma.
