Stefan is using Ampeg cabinets on stage this year, with the Modulus Flea 4 and 5 strings and a Modulus Quantum 5 fretless (lined). He's using an SVT-CL through (likely) an 8x10 on TV appearances, though I'm not sure if he's using that head on tour.

I think he might have been using some sort of Ampeg rig on Busted Stuff. The bass sounds a lot warmer and thicker on there than it does on Everyday and the Lillywhite Sessions (where I believe he recorded with an SM-900. Plus he's using an Ampeg Portaflex in the video for Where Are You Going (which was not co-written by Ballard, or Ballard would have received a writing credit like he did for every song on Everyday).

Ballard is the keyboard player on Everyday. Butch Taylor (touring keyboardist) is much better, definitely much more tasteful.

I saw him on December 22. Smokin' show, tone was good even though the bass drums drown him out at some points. The fretless Quantum sounds great (especially on Crush) but I love the Flea tone. Then again I'm a TIIINY bit biased =) I like his tone on all the cd's I have (all studio cd's except everyday and I also have L.S.) it always seems to fit the song. Then again I haven't listened to ALL of the songs recently, I've been listening to the songs from the concert I went to that I downloaded from antsmarching.org!

I would have no problem saying that steffan is my fav bass player for rock for a long time now! He has such good taste for fills. I love the use of slides on the b and e strings he does all the time! Like ants marching is so cool. And my fav song is 41 What is your guys fav dave song?

on the new cds it sounds like someone cut off one of carters arms or somthing! I love to isten to carter on the old stuff. You guys should watch that video he did of him playing the songs in a studio setting. Its really cool to watch what goes into a dave song as far as he is concerned!

I have been playing the bass guitar for 4 years now, and Stefan Lessard has been a great influence on my playing. I love the way his tone has always sounded. I agree with you guys about how his sound is a little different, but it might be a turn for the better. I mean it could be that everyone just got used to that tone and he wanted to try a new sound. Either way, I still think that Stefan Lessard is a very good player and DMB is one of the greatest bands to have ever walked the earth.

Oh, a little off topic, does anyone know what kind of effects he uses in the song ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER?

well as far as Stefan's tone goes, I didn't listen to much dave until stefan went to the new tone. I just like it better not as smooth jazzy. and thats what I like about the new albums too their not overproduced like the first bunch were. until everyday and busted stuff I could only listen to live dave albums.

I think the new music is fine it's a new step I think if dave and the guys had continued with the direction that had on the first handful of albums it wouldn't have been any fun to play. If anything I bet carter had more to do with the new albums because he gets to hold it down more, he is after all a groove drummer according to carter. I just can't stand on the DVD (which is excellent by the way with the acception of this part) how much carter and the band slows down on "ants marching" thats pathetic. get those guys a metronome

I really like JTR. thats a really good jam song and man do they jam on it in the Folsom Field DVD. I also like "Big Eyed Fish" and "Two steps".


Oh yea and i learned some crazy stuff on Lessard. HE joined the Dave Matthews band when he was 16,
16. I just thought that was pretty amazing that he was good enough to play in the DMB at 16.

I like Stefan's tone on the Folsom DVD, but its much warmer and thicker on Busted Stuff. I think he switched to Ampeg from SWR, at least for the album.

Carter doesn't need a metronome. . . I think on the end of Folsom they were just running out of steam. They played a very long set that night. Normally Carter could be used to calibrate a metronome.

Are you saying Stefan is playing behind the beat on Rapunzel on Listener Supported? I don't hear it. . . Or are you just saying the song is at a slow tempo?

Crush was the black and white video. Stefan was using a Warwick Dolphin live around that time, but I don't know if that's what he recorded the album with. Not sure about the amplification he used.
