Steinberger Club

Was looking at a new Spirit XT-25 for a colleague of mine and noticed that they've become really hard to find at local EU retailers. The white one even seems to be out of production. Anyone know what's up? Hope that means we're getting some sort of refresh.
Years ago, Gibson discontinued manufacturing the Steinberger Synapse instruments, obviously because of slow sales. The Spirit models--the XTs--continued on, a very cheaply made Steinberger variant of reasonable quality. Gibson made a half-hearted attempt to promote these, but they don't seem to have gained much appeal. My guess is that Gibson has either cut way back on manufacturing these instruments or they've completely discontinued making them.

In Italy (Rome) XT-25 is still available in both white and black finish:

Right, thanks for the explanation. Such a shame.

Count me in on this one. I just got this fantastic 1983 L2 #1333. Came with all original goodies except the leg rest had been replaced with something that a previous owner fashioned with the bayonet and a piece of some kind of aluminum (looks like an aluminum foot off of some kind of household item…).

The store incorrectly had it listen as an XL2 and was priced accordingly. $2800.

Gig bag has mold in the accessory pouch. Soaked it in vinegar and will have to hand wash. It won’t be used except to hold on to the historical items anyway, I have a much better modern steinberger size bag.

This one is a bass I’ve wanted since 2008. At this point, it’s the end all be all for me. All gas is shut down I can’t imaging a more perfect instrument for me. I tried an XL2 before this and it just doesn’t have the same mojo as the EMG SS models. It also just felt not as sturdy. The top plate and pickups seemed like they were flimsier on the body.

A couple of questions for XL2/L2 owners...

As someone who is mulling over an XL2/L2 purchase, I'm a little nervous of some of the stories I read about the necks bowing and fretboards having to be leveled to fix them, which I assume is done by Headless USA.

Are there specific questions that can be asked (other than is the the neck bowed)?

i was thinking asking for multiple pictures from the bridge to the nut on the bass and treble sides of the neck and flat/top to try and gauge the straightness of the neck.

Any input is appreciated.

I think that problem is a true rarity. I also saw that but it seems like three degrees removed stories, wives tales of something that did happen but the fable wheel keeps turning.

IWhen talking about aberrations causing playability issues we’re talking differences of as little as a fraction of a millimeter causing issues you aren’t going to be able to see that in pictures but a fret rocker can feel it. Photos also lie. My L2, the action looked pretty junk in the photos and it did have me worried it would be a dud. But, I dropped the action to the floor and it plays great. The best question is what is your return policy. I sent an XL2 back, neck was good but frets were getting pretty bad. If you see one pop up at guitar center online soon give it a pass…

Yes, I’ve seen those. I just don’t feel the need to spend $150 on a non original part.

I wish I could get my hands on one to set a silicone mold with. I could pour a resin one myself. If I find something to mold that’s of a similar shape, I’ll post the result eventually. I have a lot of options since I have the bayonet pin and spring with set screw.

I have the original leg rest for my L2 but never use it. I feel the pivot plate is the only proper way to wear a Steinberger: most ergonomic, best balance.

I’d be interested in seeing photos of your original leg rest. Specifically, does it have a friction surface, like foam or grit? The one that came with my used L2 had what looked like emery cloth to keep it from slipping, but I have no idea if it was original. 🤷‍♂️
