and some others with a washburn bantam GB60 (matsumoko made) upgradded with "rio grande pitbull " pickups and a steinberger folding leg rest.

I really wanted a Steinberger fretless but gave up for trying. I am glad I did. the Kubicki tone really helps the fretless to sound more articulate. I am sure that a fretless L2 or XL2 would sound great too, but I have been told by several players that the radius of the Kubicki fingerboard helps with fretless intonation. That is still a work in progress for me, so I can't vouch for that claim personally.

Any Steinberger fretless players here? I noticed that TT equipped black XM fretless with the synth pickup pictured earlier in the thread. Some crazy bendy sounds must come out of that one!

That would be me. I play exclusively fretless at this point - my Strangeberger is the best sounding fretless ever. And yes, I can get some seriously bendy sounds from it - it freaks a lot of people out.

Here's a more recent pic:

I have an XM2A, but it hasn't gotten any play since I switched to fivers a few years ago. This past week I pulled it out to double-check that the batteries had been removed and I fell in love with it all over again. I have a new B flat on order from Rob at Status; I'm going to string it up BEAD and put it in rotation with my fivers.

I've been kinda looking for an XQ fiver, but never seem to find one when I have money and vice-versa.

I would love a "XM25W", but so far as I know none were ever made (all XMs were narrow 5s.) I may need to knock over a gas station and have Ed Roman build me one. If I were to go this route, I'd do it with a single EMG.

I really wish Steinberger/Gibson would reissue or at least revisit the XP-2.

At one time Music Yo sold the XP-2 Spirits of which I, fortunately, snapped up two. I put Labella Deep Talkin Double Ball Tapewounds on the White XP-2 Spirit and have never looked back. It is absolutely one of my favorite basses to play. That ergonomic design has yet to be beat.

I see the GL/XT's are being brought back, "how 'bout the XP-2's ?" :hiding:

There's a Steinberger megathread? How did I miss this? I want in!

I stalked Ned at NAMM one year to get it signed. Somewhere there's a photo of the joyous occasion :hyper:

I paid $740.00 for her... Did I overpay???

I thought all steinbergerers required double ball strings????

I don't know what the going rate is, but I don't think you overpaid. That's what I got mine for about 15 years ago, and I think it's one of the best deals I ever got.

There are aftermarket kits to replace the db string retainer with a clamp, so Steiny's can use regular strings. That's definitely not an original feature.

My XP-2 was my first serious axe. For a long time, it was just a backup and I was actually trying to get rid of it. At one point, someone could have had it for as little as $300. (No takers.)

Then I had to replace the bridge "claws" and in the process we kind of bonded. (No longer for sale.) I've always admired the quality of the construction. It's got a few tones I really dig and the 2-octave neck is fun (the only one I currently have).

I've never gotten any "the '80s called" quips. :p Seems like the design is very much oblivious to the fashion trends that were so gaudy at the time. AFAIC the 'bergies could be "2025" just as easily as "1985".

IMO Ned's designs were very practical and original. I'm glad to own a specimen from Steinberger's heyday.

Hi there!
Couldn't find another thread to post this in.

I have a Steinberger XL2 and I really like it. It's the design and sound that make it so special.
Problem is: I'm missing the battery compartment latch and I really want to get it back in original condition.

Anyone knows where to get this part? Or where to look. (allready tried Ebay so many times)
Also I want to get rid of all the scratches on the body. Any1 got any experience with polishing?

Thanks a lot!

Check with Andy in the Steinberger yahoo group (or steinberger world). He has some of these made up from time to time. I bought some rubber grommets from him to hold the cover on one of mine (the original cover was present, but taped on). Good guy to deal with.

Thanks Lowrez!
I'll do that. I really want this bass to be in perfect original condition again. It annoys me a bit that it isnt right now ;-)
