I need a back up for my Steinberger XL2 from the late 80's. Has anyone tried the new spirit models.

I have a Spirit. They are well made and the hardware is perfectly acceptable, especially at the price.
They sound just OK but, as a backup, again, perfectly acceptable. I regularly gig mine. I'd say, go for it.

I believe the Steinberger Spirit basses are passive (at least the one I tried). They're going at a good price these days since Gibson/Epiphone takeover but to be honest, for an inexpensive headless bass, I'd probably go with a Hohner if you can find one used and at a good price. I have a Hohner B2ADB with the active preamp, active/passive switch and a D-tuner. Great bass I was able to find cheap a few years ago. It's much better than the Spirit imo but I don't think Hohner makes them anymore.
I agree with the above but...good luck finding one. I'm on that quest right now and what few I locate are either on the other side of the planet, or are beat to hell.
I've owned Spirits, but if I was looking for a backup for an XL2 I'd be checking out Synapses. I have two (fretted and fretless fivers) and am impressed.
I have an L2 (see avatar) and a Spirit 5-string. The Spirit was converted to fretless by Greg Curbow, and I added a preamp, which utterly transformed the sound. But the basic instrument was very sound (no pun intended) to begin with, and has kept me from any real desire to buy another fretless - quite a feat.

Exactly this. A good Tech 21 Bass driver helps if you think you're not capable of changing out pickups yourself or don't trust any of your local luthiers.
lol,.. they go for almost half of that right here on TB! my kid bought a fiver brand new for less than $1k and it sounds and plays amazing

Congrats on the purchase. Just tell your kid to be careful with the headpiece if they decide to use regular bass strings on it..
