I recently got a Sterling by Music Man Ray34. I really love the sound and feel of the bass, but I am having an issue.
I am tuning to drop d a half step down (C# G# C# F#)
I changed the strings to 110-85-70-50 gauge. I re-intonated the bridge and adjusted the string heights AND the low string is very snug in the nut (just barely sits perfectly). I also re-adjusted the pickup height slightly.
My problem is that when I am going through an amp, the low string sounds very bass-y, *almost* muddy compared to the rest of the strings. But when I tune it up to D# this problem stops and it gets a much more vibrant tone.
It sounds alright when unplugged but there is still a slight tone difference between the low string and the other 3.
I am afraid to put a 115 on it as the 110 just fit into the nut.
Am I doing something wrong?
I have 2 Washburn BB4 Bantam basses, neither of these has this problem. Very even alike tone between all string.
