Sterling Ray34 or Fender Precision MIM

ive tried both these out in a music store, and i still cant decide which bass is better for punk music. i play anything from Blink 182, to NOFX, and some metal. so, what bass is better at punk then? the Sterling Ray34 or Fender Precision MIM????

I got a RAY34 used in mint condition from the Guitar Center used website for 299. It is a FANTASTIC bass.

You can also get a P Bass MIM used for cheaper. I don't think Music Man for punk though.

Look at a majority of punk players. Music Man doesn't top the list.

Play them both and pick which one you want to use for punk. There is no best bass for punk.

MusicMan doesn't come to mind when I think of punk tones either. P-Bass does.

If you are playing old school punk like blink definitely get a pbass. But if you are interested in more hardcore punk (like stick to your guns or something) I would go for the sterling.

punk is supposed to be about doing your own thing so play whatever you like. Just be sure to play the hell out of it!

haha meant more of an old school tone with pbass. They aren't really old, although dude ranch is almost 15 years old. But considered to the punk roots they aren't old. And I don't really count new blink either.

I beg to differ, plenty of guys play Stingrays. Hell, Mark Hoppus used to play them. Dude from At The Drive In too. I think Fat Mike has played them also. I've seen a ton of "punk" bands play them.

But really, you can't go wrong either way, just depends on what you think sounds best.

The Sterling basses feel really cheap to me. Not a fan. Not worth their price tag new. I'd go for a used Fender Highway one or even American Standard. But that's just me.

My new band is punk / post hardcore, think Avail, Hot Water Music, The Terror. I really want a MM for this project. I am currently playing a jazz w. the neck pickup at 25% and the bridge at 100% to try to emulate the sound of a MM.

I just saw a a video of HWM and he's playing an ASAT. Sounded killer. I wish I kept mine.

Being a fellow Precision bass player/owner I would say shoot for the Precision. Out of the two it is the one that comes to mind more when I think punk as well. The P bass is a pretty solid bass for just about anything if you ask me.
