Sterling Ray34 preamp

Sorry if this has been asked before but I did do a quick search and didn't find anything.

I played one of these basses unplugged at GC the other day and noticed that the EQ knobs did not have a center detent. There was no way to tell when you were at the flat setting.

I was going to ask a salesman but I forgot about it and left. Now it's been bugging me. Can anyone tell me why an active bass wouldn't have center detents? Maybe the EQs are "boost only"?

Pretty sure they are boost/cut +/- 15Db

The SB14 has center detents on the pots, not positive about the "Ray" though

I thought in the one Stingray thread that a few people said they didn't have center detents. Maybe it's something that has changed between model years?

Nevermind I take it back. I think it was the SUB with 2 band that was being talked about. Not a SterlingbyMM bass.

It was probably a classic version with the 2 band preamp.

Yes, it probably was, but I don't see why that matters. Either way it's odd to have active EQ and not know when you're at the flat setting.

Yeah, the classic 2 band pre's didn't have center detents - my SUB5 doesn't have them, either... It really doesn't bother me any - I positioned the set screws on the knobs so that the mid travel position of their pots, the set screws are facing up towards me... That gives me a visual of center, and I adjust for the tone I'm looking for, and don't worry so much about anything being "flat"...

Now, on my SR5 HH, and SUB Sterling, they both have 3 band pre's, and both have center detents...

tents, but that don't matter to me cause I always run everything at "11"

Not knowing when I'm at the flat setting would bother me at least a little--not sure if it would be a deal breaker though.

Agreed - in practice, not having a detent hasn't been any more difficult than having one... After setting my knobs up as a I described before, I typically run both slightly past center, then fine tune as the situation calls for it...

i have a 2012 Ray 34 and it has center detents .
