This is why I laugh when people say Steely Dan is insipid yacht rock. Maybe it's disguised as insipid yacht rock, I don't know.
Becker and Fagin were huge jazz fans but listened to everything, and everything was an influence. What they made was something unique and original. Where we get into trouble, is when we want to put everything in a box and then pick a box for ourselves. The business likes that, because it help with marketing. You can help foil the marketing by listening to everything with open ears. It is entirely possible to like Black Flag and Steely Dan.
Steely Dan did not mind covering topics that are taboo today.
