Sting, not bad...

You'll find no complaint from me: My favorite musician of all time, hands down.

Some people LOVE to slag him for reasons I've never understood. I'm all for people having different opinions, but he seems, inexplicably, a lighting rod for all those most inclined to sound off in a negative way.

One thing I keep coming back to, among so many:
I'm not sure if there is any other musician ever who has such a wide-ranging musical pallette and influences which temper his music, and done it all so successfully:
Baroque song
Country
Bossa Nova
Jazz
Funk
Pop
Rock
Swing
Soul
Reggae
Big Band
Blues

Maybe it's that Sting hasn't done anything yet that is like heavy metal, grunge, shoegaze, or indie enough, and those people feel slighted or something? Seriously, I don't know.

I CAN admit that he can do wrong, and there are a few things by him which I'm not crazy about, and one thing by him I can say I hate. So I'm no sycophant, but overall, the guy is amazing, and we should ALL be glad someone who has his visibility and success has brought bass players/singers (and even the role of bass in music) to a wider recognition, and moved the ball forward for our shared interest- the bass.

+1 for me, except for the favorite musician of all time part, but I agree with everything else. However, the guy should catch a beat down for those shorts and that hat though.. ;p

You know as I read down the comments about that vid on YT, I can't help but wonder why the guy is so despised. Most of the comments are overwhelmingly negative, I mean the guy is called the 'C' word women hate repeatedly. I guess that's some Brit slang (which is hilarious BTW and deserving of its own thread, maybe in Off Topic) but still I just don't get it.

The general vibe I get about him is that he is somewhat pretentious and perhaps annoying, but he was undeniably influential for music in general, and bassists specifically. I don't really think he is deserving of this much vitriol.

Maybe I'm missing the story. Could someone clue me in?

i'm with ya dude. i have a fair bit of his music and think he's quite talented. i have no idea about his personality, don't really care. i just enjoy the tunes. :cool:

My impression is that Sting riles some people because he did not always seem gracious in sharing the spotlight with Copeland and Summers back in the day. All of the Police were exceptional musicians in my estimation.
On a live Police CD I have, you can hear Sting introduce a song as his new song and not as our new song. The egos clashed. It was not a pleasant arrangement, I guess.

The clip's OK I like Stu's drumming FAR more than I like Stings ANYTHING!!!!! He just seems like a snugglemuffin to me!!! Sorry thats just MY views of him since the early-mid 80's. I LOVED the 1st 2 POLICE albums but after that Sheesh they went all MOR -"Da do do do" did it for me- ended MY love affair w/ Police! Didn't like ANYTHING he did after POLICE.... seemed to me like- 'OK I'll get all the best young Jazz muso's available & see if I can sound good' & to me he DIDN'T!!!

I know I'll get flamed for my opinions here- but thats all they are MY OPINIONS!
I DO, however, appreciate all the good he's done for the Amazon Ppl & environmental issues! Just keep him away from a recording studio- for mine! :-)

Sting on upright, and with great intonation, tone and note choice. If you never thought he was much of a bassist, or some "Jazz pretender", this this what you should hear:


Ignore the video. There was never one released for the song.

Sting is great, and grew up literally one street from me, but he was famous by the time I was a kid. He's very talented and the locals who played with him back in the day have nothing but good things to say about him. A rather spacy studio owner once told me (well, he told me it a lot, actually) that he and Sting invented thrash metal in his studio once. I'm not sure how true that one is, to be fair.
