Stingray 5 HH / HS question

Stupid question: Can these basses be tamed enough to work in the occasional jazz setting (walking lines or smooth jazz)?

The reason I ask is, I'm currently learning an extended fingering approaching to playing position - three notes to a string, such as Adam Nitti teaches, resulting in palying over a five-fret area. In the lower positions, I'm finding it much easier to play this way on my 4-string, 34" scale jazz bass than my Lakland 55-02 (35" scale).


Now I'm seriously considering a 34" scale five string to make life a little easier. I've never had the opportunity to explore the HH / HS Stingrays. I play allot of rock/funk/fusion, but can only afford one five-banger. This fiver banger would need to cover the occasional soft gigs as well.

Experiences one way or the other?

You should have no prob at all getting some cool jazz tones with an HH or HS. Man, the dual pickup StingRay's are really something. I've had my HS since Feb. of '06, and it still amazes me with the variety of tones available.

Not sure why you might think you COULDN'T get nice jazz tones out of it. You can get all kinds of pickup configurations with the switch include single coil options, and you have a pretty versatile 3 band EQ. Not to mention that there's lots of comfortable places to rest your thumb if ya wanna play in different positions.

I see you used to own a 55-02. Did it have Lakland or Barts for pickups. How does your HS compare?

Looks like you own a variety of high-end fives. Which one is you're "go to"?

Yes, they have a nice smooth tone. I use mine for tame songs all the time, not jazz, but slower ballad songs (in church). I've gotten a setting that I dubbed "smooth jazz" setting and made note of it though, so yes, you can.

Phil, my 55-02 had Barts, which sounded great in my practice room (a laid back, modern tone), but got lost in the mix in a band situation. Otherwise, it was a really nice bass. I'd really like to try one with the Lakland electronics. The SR5 HS, on the other hand, is very versatile, and has no problem standing out in the mix. I feel that's one of its strengths and is why it is such a popular bass.

I haven't chosen the "go to" bass yet. They all have their own sound and feel and I'm having a great time playing them all.
