I'm trying to figure out what the main difference is between the HH and HS. I know that the HH selector works like this (1) coils 1-2, (2) coils 1-4, (3) coils 1-2-3-4, (4) coils 2-3, and (5) coils 3-4. All Parallel!, How does it work on the HS?

StingRay SR5 HS question

There actually is another single coil under the pickguard, too low to make noise which cancels the hum.
After seeing these configurations, I can safely say that both are missing the Humbucker in series setting of the regular SR5 and the HS offers the bridge single coil setting from the regular SR5 which the HH does not. What would you all say is the biggest difference in tone of the HH & HS?
Im going to say they are quite similiar. I think the main edge the HS has is that with all coils running, it is a little more aggresive perhaps since the majority of the coils are closer to the bridge. I say that as an advantage only because I dig that in a tone. HH gets the booty going for sure though. If you want a really meaty dub tone, the HH does it better. If you want a thin jaco ish tone, the HS does that pretty well when you solo just the bridge coil.

I decieded to save my pennies for a new HS Sterling, I already have a Ray 4 H, and after playing both "up close and personal", I really liked the P bass tones from pos. 5 on the Sterling, I didn't play an HS Ray 5 but think that it would be very similar. PS if you thump at all the HS gives you more clearance between the neck and the PU. That was also a factor for me, know I just fretting over colours, if only I could find a remaining HS Sterling in buttercream.....

Awesome. If I ever have enough cash laying around, I'm getting an SR4 or SR5 HS, then. Anyone know if the HS or HH solved the problem with the D and G strings kinda sounding weak? I used to have 2 Sterlings and they both had the same affliction

My SR4 has a good strong signal from the D and G strings, but I have played those that sound weak, I probably played over 20 before I got the one that felt right to me, and I'll never let her go. So yeah, that can be a problem, but there are some superb EB MM SR4 H's out there - gotta go find 'em though.
Regarding the SR4 HH and Sterling HS / HH, I've probably played 10 different examples (combined), and all of the basses I played never had this problem, either I was really lucky or the new electronics have solved the problem.
All mass produced basses vary from one unit to the next but IMHO opinion EB MM's are one of the few companies that can mass produce real gems.

This thing about weak D & G strings just goes to show how different players get different hings from basses. I have owned about seven MusicMan basses, and i never had a problem with uneven response from the strings.
