Stock DI vs. DI Box/Pedal??

I have a Traynor dyna 800h Bass head with a DI out on the rear of the head....

would buying a DI box/pedal be overkill and un- needed?? Ive never used my own DI box....I just want more tonal control over the sound that feeds through the PA.....

If a DI box is a good idea any recommendations for a decently priced one?

If you already have a DI out on the back of your amp, I'm not entirely sure why you'd want a separate DI box or pedal unless it was for the tone shaping of the pedal (i.e. Tech21 Sansamp), but even then you could run from the Sansamp to your amp and out the DI output on the back of the amp.

im just toying around with ideas...im gonna save my cash for some cool handmade effects pedal since i already have the DI on the back

Typically the DI out of the back of the head is enough unless.
1) there is no ground lift on the head
2) the transformers used are cheap and thus noisy.

I lone DI box can come in handy:
1) you don't rely on your head for tone (use a sans amp VT or similar preamp on the floor) and want to go straight to FOH.
2) or just like the sound of your bass clean

I have one friend that often shows up and plugs his '75 P-Bass into a Radio JDI and through a pro system (wouldn't try it at the local pub with questionable speakers etc) sounds amazing. But that puts a fair amount of trust in the FOH guy.
