Stolen basses alert in Atlanta

Got home from work yesterday and found my back door kicked in and 5 of my basses gone along a couple of six strings.

Roadworn P-bass with a RW Jazz neck and tort guard
Hwy 1 sunburst P bass with a CIJ maple neck and gold guard.
Hwy 1 black P bass with a CIJ rosewood neck and tort guard.
The 3 above all had vintage RI bridges and tuners.
'71 natural P bass w/ a maple '76 neck and neck plate and gold guard. Had that one since '78.
CIJ white '62 RI Jazz bass with a rosewood Allparts neck with block fingerboard inlays and Nordstrand p'ups
Cherry '63 Gibson SG Junior with 1 bent tuning key. I inherited this one from my Dad whe he passed away, which makes it more painful.
'83 Sigma-Martin acoustic flattop.

All pix, etc were on my desktop computer and/or laptop, both of which were also taken. Also gone is an external hard drive I had everything backed up on.

I expect some of this stuff will turn up on Craigslist and ebay, so if anyone out there sees anything suspicious on the Atlanta Craigslist or elsewhere, shoot me a PM. Right now my only computer access is from work.

I'm so sorry. Esp about your Dad's SG Jr.

I wish you the best and hope your basses come back to you.
.........and hope the guy that stole your basses spontaneously combusts.

Good place to start looking but unless whoever has them is a complete idiot the won't be on a CL in your locale. Then again if he's selling them quickly to raise cash to buy drugs he may well be that stupid.

Dan, I think the thought that it was someone who knew you had them isn't a bad place to start looking either. Even close neighbors who can hear you play or see you coming and going with them. I have those same concerns in the condo building I'm in. Every one around me knows I play so my stuff is all insured with photos and sn# stored elsewhere in addition to being on my laptop.

Glad to hear you had some insurance coverage. That may get you some $$$ but I sure won't replace the unique nature of that herd. I can understand your frustration and I wish you good luck with recovering all of them. I know it won't be easy but keep the faith. Criminals do a lot of dumb things and can leave some obvious trails.

My buddies house down in Newnan (suburb of Atlanta) was *attempted* to be robbed the same way... 3 thugs kicked in the back door. Luckily, he was home and when they saw him they bugged out. (Ironically, his name is Dan too but hes about 6'-5" and it was enough to deter the would-be crooks)

Here's the crazy part - he identified 1 of the thieving a--hats in a police lineup and testified in court against him. But due to some legality of the thief being a minor he was only given a very minor slap on the wrists and released even though it was his 3rd offense.

I guess i'll go buy something to wedge the back door closed. I'm very sorry for your losses and I will keep my eyes open on CL and the local pawnshops.

Sorry to hear about this. The same thing happened to me earlier this year. I had just started to play again, so only had inexpensive equipment. They did take me for all the tv's and gaming systems in the house also a ipad. Good luck getting it back. Also if you tell a pawn broker he has stolen stuff he knows what to hide.

I had 3 instruments stolen and the police found them through a single serial number (the others weren't listed as required) at guitar center Hollywood on security hold. fwiw and good luck!

This is by far the best FENDER i have played. I had a 75 RI that i regretted selling years ago this one easily replaces it. The action on mine is to die for, i had them set it up and LOVE IT.

Cool, I took a chance and saw it at naam but didn't play it but had to have it....aside from the cosmetic flaws which I was dissapppointed in from a botique priced bass, I love the tone of the thing....it really grinds!!! I don't know how the windings are different in the select pickups but they definitely sound better than my other jazz stock vintage ones and that decreasing radius board is the most comfortable fendef I own. You are the first dude I have asked about the select so thx for the input.

Dan, I know you're hurting over this, big time. I would also feel violated if any of my precious gear ever met the same fate.

My message to you is: Don't give in to feelings of despair & frustration. Keep looking and don't give up!

Summon as much detail on each instrument (and computer) as possible, whether it be serial numbers, precise descriptions - whatever. Be thorough & meticulous about covering any conceivable points at which even one of your items might resurface, i.e. pawn shops, Guitar Centers, mom & pop guitar shops, second-hand stores, Craig's List - and of course the police. Then, don't stop shaking the bushes - even if it takes months. You never know whether the scum might be sitting on your gear for awhile until the heat subsides. If you don't give up, you may still have a chance to recover it.

Remember, it takes only one item to pop - at which point the police can rapidly trace its origins...and possibly find other items of your gear as well. Hang in there!

I think this is a calling to all of us fellow tb'ers who haven't already done so to photograph and record all of our gear and catalog all seriel #'s at the MINIMUM....extra security measures wouldn't hurt either, and that homeowners/renters insurance isn't lookin so expensive sounding now. Again my condolences...

I REALLY hope you can get your stuff back! I would call around to pawn shops here in town. I used to manage a pawn shop and you learn how to spot individuals who are trying to pawn stolen stuff. Perhaps the employees will remember any suspicious-acting customers.
