I heard an interview with him on the CBC the next day. He was being pretty philosophical about it. I don't know what it is about this city, man. It seems that we're hearing about a lot of this stuff lately. The Pascale Picard band had the same thing happen, and one of the bands playing the local pub scene (!) had their van broken into as well.
I hate that shift, man. It wouldn't even occur to me that I'd have the right to break into someone else's life that way.

I'm sure there are few a things in this world worse than a thief... I just can't seem to think of any right now!
This sucks! They are playing their show tonight, here in Toronto using rented gear, according to local radio... still sucks though!

a lesson to be learned: never have the gear stay in the same city you play in when on tour. have the crew drive an hour before stopping at a hotel, have the tm book one with secure parking.
I went to see a band last year in Toronto and the police come in and check out serial #'s of basses and guitars from time to time.
They checked out the bass player's bass (older Fender P) came back later and took it off him between sets as it was stolen. The bassist told the cop "but I've had this bass for 6 years" and the cop didn't really care as it is still hot. Not like there is a statute of limitations on a hot instrument. Dumba$$! Not sure if he is in troble though. Didn't see if they did more than take the bass.

Hopefully they reinstate the death penalty for the ba$tard.
P.S. I bet this stuff gets recovered. The Reverend and Gibson guitars are pretty distinctive.

It's a shame that that happened. I doubt they will be able to pawn much of it as Watt's Gibson is pretty durned distinctive, as is much of the Stooges' gear.
Unfortunately this happens more often than not in Montreal and should stand as an example of keeping current detailed photos of your gear as well as record the serial numbers. A number of bands I know that have played clubs in Montreal (including my own) have had their vans/trucks broken into and stuff stolen from them.
Let's hope the stuff is found and returned.

Yeah, I heard about this a little while ago.
Sucks so hard. I'm the biggest Stooges fan on the planet and I was so happy to see Iggy get back with the Asheton Bros. And who could ask for a better replacement for Dave Alexander than Mike Watt!
Biggest drag is that Iggy is doing okay (financially speaking) and Watt, I imagine, makes a living at least (though that doesn't make up for losing such an instrument) but Ron and Scott Asheton aren't wealthy people. After Iggy jettisoned the Stooges, the Ashetons never saw much money from all the work they did with him from the late 60s to the early 70s.
Things are just taking off for them again (Ron Asheton even had an endorsement deal with Reverend and a signature guitar) but that's still gotta hurt.
I'd like to have 20 minutes alone in a concrete bunker with the @$$h*le$ that are responsible for this.

I don't know if this has been posted, but a fan from New York drove up to Toronto, and gave Watt a '65 Gibson EB-3 as a gift to replace his lost bass. He's in the process of turning it into the mutt he lost.
That's really sweet of the guy to do that. And what sucks is that Iggy finally let Watt use his Eden rig instead of SVT's. If Watt had kept using rented SVT's, he wouldn't have lost his stuff.
However, the Stooges and Mike Watt will go on. I've had stuff stolen before, too. It sucks really bad, but you go on. Stuff can be replaced.
