Double Bass Storche-Hrabe

After a warm up of scales, use it to focus on specific ideas. Much of the book can reflect different excerpts. It could be a bowing issue or a left hand issue. It works these techniques in a musical and enjoyable way. Make music out of those etudes.

I would favour Sturm 110 Studies and Slama 66 Studies in all Keys over my ancient copy of Storch-Hrabe. I would put all three ahead of Hrabe (ed. Simandl) 86 Etudes and Simandl 30 Etudes that are downright boring, like Simandl Tutor.

Sturm and Slama I like because the exercises are musical, varied, very playable, and very like real-life orchestral passages in difficulty. They are worth working on for quality, not just quantity. Kment very quickly gets into difficult keys and isn't as well graded in difficulty. Bottesini 24 Etudes are not easy. Gradus ad Parnassum and Findeisen are too hard, long and tedious to get much joy from, like running a musical marathon. Most difficult orchestral passages are not that long and you can find these in excerpt books.
