Strange pickup position on active jazz basses?

Why is the bridge pickup on those custom shop active basses so close to the pickguard? Is it shortscale? or is the neck longer or something?

its a 21 fret neck as opposed to 20, so it looks a little off from the standard.

OR, it could just be because it has 60s pup spacing, like the bass with the white guard here:

Neck is a little longer on the Custom Classics (21 frets). Also, notice how far the bridge sits away from the edge of the body.
