Hi guys, complete newbie here with regards to changing pickups. I have a similar issue with the OP here regarding the model-j pickup height.
So I just bought a bridge position Dimarzio Model-J to install into my Geddy Lee Jazz Bass (2006 model - CIJ). Obviously, the model J is a lot taller than the stock pickups and if I used the stock foam, it would not fit in the cavity. If I remove the foam completely, the model-j is about the same height as the original pickup so I don't think I need to rout the bass.
Now my question is, can I just install the pickup without any foam at all? Because I don't think I'll need to raise the pickup any more than it already is. Also, there is a metal plate under the foam with a wire connected to the body of the volume pot (ground?). Without any foam, the bottom of the pickups is actually touching this plate. Is that detrimental in any way? Should I put a thin layer of foam there?
I appreciate any help you guys can give.
