Acceptable, or bad for the neck in the long haul. (ala' acoustic gee-tar style)
Have a bass that has enough neckdive that I either have to sell it or find an acceptable solution. I will also but hittin' GC to buy a fatter leather strap with a suede underside, as the current nylon one is not helping matters.
The strap around the head stock while weird feeling at first, completely helps.

What kind of bass are you referring to? It would be understandable if it were a violin-style bass, a la Sir Paul. But it would be very awkward looking if it were a Fender or a T-bird.

Based on my experience with that sort of setup on acoustic guitars, it tends to transfer the instrument's weight off your shoulder and on to the back of your neck, which I consider a negative.

this is ridiculous, think of all the lbs of pressure from the strings on the neck. The little extra from the weight of the bass/guitar won't make any difference

Given the fact that most basses with neck dive have light bodies & heavier necks, I don't see this being a problem.
A body weighs on average 7-12 lbs. String tension ranks anywhere from 30-60 lbs, depending on scale length & string gauge. It's definitely negligible in this regard.
It will reduce how well it sits on your shoulder, though. It's changing the angle the strap crosses your body at dramatically. You'll no longer have the tight curve from your back across the front of your body to your horn.
If you can get used to this without the strap slipping down your arm, then you're set. If not, maybe look at extending the strap button mount. I've seen some custom jobs where a 4-5" steel rod was screwed into the strap button location and the button was screwed to the end of the rod.

It's fine. If you're happy, there's no problem. It's not going to bother the instrument at all.

I've done it with a righty Fender copy which I played lefty. Just extended the strap as long as it would go. Nothing bad happened to either me or the bass during the couple of years I did this.

Tune it hangin normal then check it with the strap at the nut.Imagine what is happening while you're playing and moving around.Some necks just won't take it. Same goes for tuning,gotta let go of each peg as you adjust and check.Hanging on to the peg while checking tune can alter the adjustment.

Play an open string , tug on the headstock , hear that ?

If you can't hear it watch your tuner while you do it.

Reading topics here on TB about bolt on necks knocked out of alignment during shipping, I can't think of a better way to knock the neck out the alignment than to attach the strap this way.
Imho a big nono...

And there's nothing wrong with hanging a bass on a wall (if you use a proper hanger) The forces involved are completely different than those when strapped on the headstock in playing position.
