Done right, strap spins a kinda cool (in a teenage, hair band sorta way), but when they go bad, they are MEGA EPIC bad! Can a person actually die of embarrassment?

If you can bear through it*, at the 2:50 mark, 3:30 mark as well, there's some strap/bass/dude spins.

No kidding...all you have to do is watch her left hand position and right hand to see she's playing this 'for real'. It's not like she's playing anything super tech....she's just adding a little showmans flair to it.
On-topic edit : No way in hell I'd ever attempt a strap spin. I might kill a bandmate!

Nylon straps and t-shirts are your friend. Provide protection from the burn and there is very little friction between them.
i always wanted to do these with my guitars (basses are WAY too big for this. dont wanna be knocked out), but i wear them too high and use leather straps. the few times ive tried it didnt go well.
i went to college with a guy in a punk band that said his band would do them constantly. both guitarists AND the bassist, front AND back. they didnt think they were a very good band, so they covered with stage antics and dick jokes. as far as i can tell, it worked.

Even if you're not the most technically proficient band, stage presence and the audiences perception account for a lot.
But hey, why can't you be proficient and do some crazy looking tricks?

I have a nylon strap on my Ibanez and I STILL gave myself neckburn (and a bruise). Still, it doesn't hurt after the second day.

There's a bunch of flips on YouTube but IMO they are not very realistic unless it's shown in a 'real' situation where you're actually playing and need to resume playing on cue.

You can't see it in the video, but the little breaks are because I was actually playing along to music before and after some of the spins .

Most of this is fun till it goes wrong and then the cost of repair come in to it as well as instrument damage. I "lost" my bass from a spin about 20years back when the screw in strap button that goes in to the body from the strap lock failed. Result was the bass went flying off, landed on the headstock and snapped it in between the D and G string machine heads. Cost of repair was £130 but the bass was never really the same, and the shame of having to go and get it back, then play it for the rest of the gig with 3 strings.
1/ replace any strap button screws with longer and more secure screws.
2/ try and use a one piece strap so there are no weak connections to fail
3/always double check these points before a gig.
As its a visual thing never really use a guitar you care about, maybe get a cheaper one to use or practice with.

I watched a friend chunk a fender bass into the third row pew of a church cause his strap locks failed. Broke his bass in two just below the pickups. Ouch.
Apparently I am the only one who thinks this stuff is for guitarists who haven't practiced enough to actually impress with their playing; which kind of surprises me
