PS: that strap-maker is full of it!
As has been said I don’t wave while I’m playing. This is like debating the merits of various brands of toilet paper.

Yeah after considering it for a sec, I realized if I give you so much as a slight head nod while I’m playing it’s only because I’m in an unusually good mood
I use 4-1/2 inch Levy's padded garment leather straps on basses and 3-1/2 on guitars. I like how it spreads the weight out. I guess that's why they make straps in different widths.
Hmm. I’ve never actually measured my 2. One is the Scott’s Bass Lessons Black Edition (which I absolutely adore) and an Ergo Strap which is like 1/2” wider than the SBL. I like them both but prefer the SBL Black. It’s a bit more “supple”.
Whether it’s true or not, l trust my own experiences and what my body tells me and my body says anything 3” or wider is good.

Exactly. Different strokes. It's fascinating how some folks think that their own preference should apply to everyone.
I certainly agree that minds should remain open to unlikely possibilities, however I once bought a skinny 1.5" strap that was on sale because I thought it looked cool. I played a bunch of gigs with it, and always found it uncomfortable even with a chambered bass that weighs just over 8 pounds.
My comfort zone is 2.5 to 3 inches, and I have a couple of 4" straps that I'll use with my heaviest basses. So, maybe these wider straps cause a bit of guitar movement when I'm waving or looking over my shoulder... but that is near the very bottom of my concerns when I'm gigging.
ALWAYS 2.5" - wider than that it rides uncomfortably on the anatomical bit that sticks up there.

Peter Steel from Type O Negative. They were one of my favorite bands back in the 90s. That guy was huge.
My preference is 3" wide. Lower than that and there's not enough spread, higher than that and it digs into my neck.

Width doesn’t bother me too much, as long as the strap is nice and slippery.

Three inches for bass and two and a half inches for guitar have gotten me comfortably through 60 years of playing. And, for the past 40 years, Levy's has been my go to.

Most of my straps are 3" - 3 1/2" and very comfortable
I generally find 2" suede very good, 2" seatbelt nylon is WAY too slippery, 3" and over just doesn't fit my shoulder. But 2" seems too heavy duty at the moment so I just bought a 3/8" strap. Bass only weighs 2 pounds
