Strap wideness - an interesting discussion

I see it like this. My spine is where my strength is. A wider strap pushes the bass weight farther from my center, and it feels heavier on my shoulder. I arrived at this through experience. I'm happy using a 2" strap up close to my neck. Is there a thinner strap that adjusts by sliding?

I think the part of Keef talking about the instrument moving around is a moot point, because I don't know about the rest of you, but I tend to keep my hands on my bass while I'm playing, which makes it incredibly convenient to move it wherever I want it. I don't position myself relative to the bass, I position the bass relative to myself.

And for what it's worth, I prefer wider straps. In my profile picture, you can see a DIY strap I did out of nylon webbing, 4" wide. I made them for my touring basses, fixed length, bolted to the body so no risk of them coming off either, and I always wore that jacket on stage, so it helped prevent it digging into my neck.
