The thing I have noted is the the Schaller and Fender locks come with shorter screws than the original end pin screws.

Putting a longer screw in requires that you turn or mill the edges of the screw to fit in the barrel.

The manufacturer could provide a longer screw with more
reliability. They choose not to.

Thus the problems with stress and loosening. I have to check them every time I play the bass.

With this thread being in the same sub-forum as Chicks at Shows, I first thought...

A little bit of wood filler or contact cement on the screw, or in the hole, will help maintain a tight joint for the straplock. There's always the ol' toothpick trick, too.

So my beater bass is a Yamaha BBG5. Actually not a bad bass at all. I bought mine used and beat up. It is the one that lives in the truck of my car, and goes to nasty gigs. Anyway, in an effort to "bomb proof" the bass, I have the strap screwed to the bass, with long screws, and fender washers on the ends of the screws. OK, so I am filling in with a band, and I go to do my stolen "billy sheehan" harmonics and bend the neck SLIGHTLY routine. Push on the butt of the body, and the end of the headstock, little vibrato to the open E plus harmonics at the 5th fret of the D and G strings. A cute little e minor thing. Works well. Except when the strap rips.......

Yamaha BBG5 basses fly about as well as chickens do. Dented the heck out of a couple frets in the "money" section. They have already been dressed back to "good to go". The bass is none the worse for wear.

Makes sense. I cannot recall putting Schallers on any instrument where they did not seem slightly smaller in diameter and/or length than the originals.

FWIW, I dip the screw in wood glue (such as Elmer's) before installing and they seem to be staying put.

Any straplock + gorilla glue + toothpick = Never coming out. You guys are doing it all wrong.
