Double Bass String Emporium Hybrid or Upton Laminate

if you have a vacation day to spare, it’s a really inspiring experience to go to a GOOD bass shop, set it up in advance, talk to the owner, compare instruments, hang out, maybe play for the other folks milling around the shop, and walk away with your favorite (in your budget range, of course). I also think it’s the best way to avoid buyers remorse. You know that you got the one that YOU love.

If that’s not an option, it seems like you can’t go wrong with either the Thompson or Upton. Loads of reviews here with happy customers in each camp. They can’t all be wrong.

I’m going to be purchasing a bass soon. I don’t have the resources or time to drive the 5 hours to any large city. So I plan on having one shipped in.

After multiple searches and reading many posts I’ve still not found a consensus in the forum.

I am a former high school player who is looking for a jazz set up and sound with a very small possibility of gigs in the future.

Climate wise I’m in Lubbock Texas where it is very dry.

What bass will I most likely be happy with for a long time?
What did you end up with? I'm also (almost 3 years after this post) looking for a good plywood. Hoping to land an Upton. I currently have an old German Hybrid that is a bit of a hassle compared to the plywood bass that I used to have. I'm looking to add a plywood bass as a backup to my carved bass.
