String for fender JMJ

Hi,

Looking for recommendations for the mustang jmj bass.

Also, what length should i order?

The JMJ comes from the factory with long-scale Fender flatwounds installed. This isn't really ideal because the thickest part of the E string is wound around the tuning post, which with some strings can cause damage to that string (either broken wrap wire or wrap separation which can cause strange non-musical overtones) though I haven't heard of issues with the stock strings so it may not be much of an issue with those particular strings. LaBella makes a Mustang-specific DTF flat wound string if you want something thumper sounding than the stock strings. Otherwise "medium-scale" strings ae usually the correct length- however "short-scale" from certain companies like Thomastik-Infeld actually fit the Mustang correctly. Somewhere on TB there is a thread where someone made an exhaustive list of strings that fit Mustangs. Maybe search this Strings forum for "Mustang"

+1 for the LaBella Mustang flats. Have them on my Vintera Mustang and they are excellent. They fit right, the tension feels good, and they sound great.

I use Ernie Ball regular slinky round wounds medium scale length on my Mustang. They fit just right.

Think in terms of "winding length" (ball end to taper/silk) instead of "scale length". The thru-body Mustang needs strings with 33"-35" winding length, which for most manufacturers is "medium scale". Two notable exceptions are DR "short scale" (33.75" winding) and TI "short scale" (35.5" winding).
