String Gauge and tension...

I have 2 G&L basses. One is an '08 SB2 and the other is a new L2k anniversary, 2011. The L2k has its stock strings on it. D'Addario Light gauge round wounds and the SB 2 has D'Addario Mediums on it. Also round wound. I can got lower action on the SB2 with less fret buzz then on the L2k. The L2k insists that I have higher action to eliminate fretbuzz. I play pretty heavy on both and I do not consider myself a "light touch" type of player.

Can it be something about neck relief being different with a higher tension string?
